Lucy Dickens Fine Art

Award winning Lucy Dickens Fine Art is one of the premier juried host studios on the tour, #11 on the tour map. Her gallery/studio is located in Carefree, just across from the beautiful Boulders resort. The talented group of six artists at the studio has a strong following that continues to increase each year. In 2017, just under 2,000 people visited this unique studio!

Dickens and her husband have transformed a once discarded and abandoned home in Carefree into an incredible Mediterranean villa, a jewel in the desert. Her grand gallery space off the front courtyard and opening into her working studio has got to be seen and experienced.

The Art of Lucy Dickens

Dickens has created a unique, story-like approach to her landscape oil painting.  She discovers the landscape and transforms it into a narrative pictorial on canvas.  Her landscape paintings convey an emotional reaction that transports the viewer into scenes of beautiful tranquility; an authentic place and time. Dickens explains, “I enjoy painting in a series from my travels; bringing viewers along on the journey through my images and accompanying story. I hope to inspire, to evoke feeliTHEngs of serenity and grace, capture memories, and fleeting moments of beauty. “I am a fine art storyteller.”  www.LucyDickensFineArt.com

The Art of Beth Cox

Gourd Art, Elizabeth Cox

Gourd Art, Elizabeth Cox

During the Hidden in the Hills Tour, Dickens will be featuring award-winning gourd artist Beth Cox, of Quail Run Studio. Beth’s process of transforming a gourd into a work of art begins with creating the black features on the bird. She hand-sculpts a polymer clay beak and top-knot for each quail, baking them to permanently harden. She then sketches a design on the gourd that she burns into its surface with a pyrography pen. Ink dyes are applied to add vivid jewel tones to the design.

Usually, Beth’s designs are derived from desert botanicals and desert creatures. Each design is unique and offers a glimpse into the fascinating world of the Sonoran Desert through her eyes. “My art has a universal appeal because of the attraction people have to our feathered desert quail friends. Each piece evokes a happy feeling and draws the viewer in for a closer look,” says Cox   www.QuailRunStudio.com

Glass, Rene Schnog

Glass, Rene Schnog

Rene Schnog, a glass fusion artist, fell in love with art at an early age. Rene graduated from Philadelphia’s prestigious Hussian School of Art. After graduating, he worked as a graphic artist and went on to become the art director of a large printing company. He advanced his art studies to include sculpture, photography and glass. Now, Rene has found a true love in fused glass. His goal is to make beautiful and functional glass art that can be enjoyed. He takes inspiration from nature, combining those qualities with his graphic art background.  www.PalloDesigns.com

Patty Russell, also a creative and talented jeweler, will be returning to this studio as well!  Recently, Russel described the reasons for her artistic enthusiasm.

“I have always had a fascination with metal, beads, and especially pearls. I grew up watching my Dad, a very talented jeweler, working at his bench. The result was a lifelong love of the art. Living in the Sonoran Foothills north of Phoenix, I am constantly aware of the beauty all around me. The desert inspires with its unique colors, shapes and textures. Whether by style or material or perhaps color, my pieces are all connected in some way. I love the textures, shapes and colors that can be achieved using metals, leather and stones.”

The Art of Joshua Dopp

Glass, Joshua Dopp

Glass, Joshua Dopp

Lucy is excited to welcome the newest addition, Joshua Dopp, to the team. Joshua Dopp has been working with hot glass for nearly thirty years. As an artist, his work takes many forms. Not content to have a signature style, Joshua is constantly experimenting and allowing the topic and force of the moment to inspire and inform his work. The search for balance and harmony and the revealing of beauty by combining divergent and seemingly opposable themes largely guide his work.

Joshua received his MFA in Glass and Sculpture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a BA in Art History from the University of California at Santa. Joshua is currently a master level art instructor at the Mesa Arts Center. He has exhibited extensively from Santa Barbara, California to Zurich, Switzerland. http://www.joshdopp.com
