The Peak: Happy Valentine’s Day. It’s a holiday!

From A Peek at the Peak, February 1991

VALENTINE’S DAY A HOLIDAY

Valentine’s Day is a state holiday in Arizona. Not because Arizonans are exceptional lovers (most think they are), but because the territory of Arizona was admitted to statehood on Feb. 14, 1912. Moving pictures were made of President William Howard Taft signing the statehood bill. It was the first time a moving-picture record was made of a White House event. Arizona was the 48th state admitted to the Union and was known as the Baby State until  Alaska and Hawaii were admitted in 1959.
