“Concentration” by Laurel Strohmeyer. Grand Prize, Winner, 2016 Summer Fun Photography Contest.

Laurel Strohmeyer’s uplifting photograph of a young great horned owl taking flight in the early morning light is the grand prize winner of the 2016 Summer Fun Tony Nelssen Photography Contest. More than 50 photographs were judged and “Concentration” flew off with the award.

Laurel Strohmeyer, a wildlife advocate and resident of north Scottsdale, likes to shoot wildlife videos. She wrote,

“When possible I take a biographical approach to my wildlife shooting and this past spring I located a great horned owl’s nest.  I decided I would shoot from beginning to end.  I spent countless hours at the nest shooting and filming and captured some great moments.  Keep in mind they are owls, and the activity occurs in the worst possible lighting conditions and in that situation, I chose to capture the image, even if grainy.”

We’re glad to see that Laurel more than overcame the difficult lighting conditions and caught that special instant.

The grand prize was awarded to the best overall image of entries submitted in  various  categories.

Landscapes: Images of a local landscape, flora, and other natural scenery.

Wildlife: Images of local wildlife, including birds, mammals, reptiles, etc.

Local People: Images of scenes of local people engaged in local traditions and everyday lifestyles.

Travel: Image of a landscape, wildlife, people, scenery taken on a trip outside of Arizona.

The winners of the above categories will be featured in upcoming issues of The Peak.
