Cinematic Reflections on WWII: Little Known Stories of the War
Mission of the Shark
World War II is one of the best known and widely depicted conflicts in history. This film series will explore little known stories from that war — stories filled with daring, intrigue, and sometimes such improbability that they have to be seen to be believed. At the heart of each one are the men and women who made World War II modern history’s seminal event. A post-film discussion, facilitated by Gary Zaro, faculty WWII expert from Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC), will follow. This month: Mission of the Shark (1942) (92 min.): Story of the USS Indianapolis, sunk by a Japanese submarine, when nearly 600 crewmen were victims of shark attacks. Children ages 2½ to 6,or those who have not yet entered kindergarten, are encouraged to join us for a 30-minute storytime featuring books, music, flannel stories and puppets. Each week there will be an activity of some kind that follows the stories. Some weeks it may be a movement or music activity, and other weeks will include an art activity. Siblings are welcome. Registration is not required.

Les Conklin is a resident of north Scottsdale He founded Friends of the Scenic Drive, the Monte de Paz HOA and is the president of the Greater Pinnacle Peak Association. He was named to Scottsdale's History Maker Hall of Fame in 2014. Les is a past editor of A Peek at the Peak and the author of Images of America: Pinnacle Peak. He served on the Scottsdale's Pride Commission, McDowell Sonoran Preserve Commission, the boards of several local nonprofits and was a founding organizer of the city's Adopt-A-Road Program.. Les is a volunteer guide at the Musical Instrument Museum.
