2nd Pinnacle Peak Mystery Car Rally, Sunday, April 14, 2013: 2 – 5 p.m.
An Adventurous Search for Quizzical Places
Sunday, April 14, 2013: 2 – 5 p.m.
Twenty teams of family, friends, or co-workers shared this fun-packed hunt on wheels through beautiful north Scottsdale, Carefree, Cave Creek, and northeast Phoenix. Along the way they learned about the area’s unique history and landscape.
Everyone had a great time and helped preservation, education, and the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive.
The Rally
The rally started at the Pima Norte commercial center, located on the southwest corner of Pima & Cave Creek Roads.
At the starting point, teams received a set of directional clues to help them find their first mystery location – a unique place unknown to most locals. When they reached that location and correctly answer a question about it, they received a poker card and the directional clues to find the next location. Then, they were off on another exciting quest for a different destination.
Points were given to the team based on answers to questions and the strength of its poker hand. The winning team released a rehabilitated great horned owl with the assistance of Wild At Heart.
Plus Post Rally Excitement
The rally ended at Harold’s in Cave Creek. Teams stayed for:
- Awards Ceremony
- Release of Great Horned Owl
- Raffle
- Food & Cash Bar
- Support for Nonprofit Causes. GPPA is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization. Rally proceeds benefit education, preservation, and the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive.
This was the second rally that GPPA has held. Rally registrations were tax-deductible. All team members had to register in advance. The number of teams that could take part in the rally was limited to ensure teams got off to a speedy start.

- Adult Rally Registration: $25 tax deductible donation per person
- Kid’s (12 & Under) Rally Registration: $5 tax deductible donation per child
* After April 7th, adult registrations: $30 p/p, Kids: $5.
Frequently Asked Questions
#1. Who can be on a my team? Anyone as long as you have one adult driver and the team can fit in one vehicle. Friends, neighbors, people in your family, or from work can all be on your team. If you own or manage a business or belong to an HOA, consider having your organization “sponsor” a team.
#2. Where will the rally begin? The rally will start at the Pima Norte commercial center, located at the intersection of Pima and Cave Creek Roads (SW corner). There are two entrances to the center, one on the west side of Pima Road, just south of Cave Creek Road (pictured here). The other entrance to the center is from the south side of Cave Creek Road, just west of Pima Road. A brown sign, like the one pictured here, marks each entrance.
The parking lot has plenty of spaces and members of your team who are meeting you can leave their cars while the rally is on-going.
#3. When will the rally begin? To avoid congestion, a team can choose a reporting time that is convenient for it, either 2 p.m. or 2:30 p.m. After reporting, starts will be staggered with a few minutes separating each team’s start. Teams that report at 2 p.m. should finish earlier than teams that report at 2:30 p.m.
#4. How will the rally begin? A GPPA volunteer will give each team an envelope. When the team opens the envelope, they will find a sheet that lists clues to get them to the first mystery location. For example, the first clue on the sheet might read “Drive to the TNT road and turn east.” In other words, drive to Dynamite Boulevard and go east. After turning east on Dynamite, the team will tackle the second clue. The clues will not be hard to follow and will lead your team to some very unique locations in the north Valley.
The sheet will also contain a question. When your team arrives at the first location, it will have to find the answer to the question. Once they’ve answered the question, a volunteer will give them an envelope containing the clues and question for the second mystery location. At each destination, a volunteer will give your team a new envelope with the next set of clues and a question, along with a playing card from the volunteer.
#5. How does the rally end? The final envelope of clues will take your team to a central location where the awards program and post-rally festivities will take place.
A variety of food, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase at the business establishment where the rally ends.
#6. When does the rally end? It will take approximately two hours to drive the course and find all the locations. Since the start is staggered, we expect the first teams to finish at 4 p.m. We expect the last team to arrive at approximately 4:30 p.m., depending upon the number of cars participating.
#7. How are the winners determined? The rally is not a race for speed and all speed limits should be obeyed. Points will be awarded for correct answers to questions and the strength of the poker hand.
#8. What if our team gets lost? At the starting point, each team will be given a sealed envelope with emergency instructions.
#9. What should I wear? You don’t need fancy racing clothes! Relax and dress casually and comfortably. The awards program and festivities following the rally will be held inside.
