Headlines

Southbound Loop 101 restrictions begin tonight

Scottsdale commuters should prepare for significant Loop 101 traffic restrictions from 9 p.m. today, June 9, to 5 a.m. Monday, June 13.

The southbound far right lane and southbound Loop 101 ramps listed below will be closed from 9 p.m. Thursday, June 9, to 10 p.m. Friday, June 10, to prepare for further weekend closures:

  • Chaparral Road on ramp
  • Indian School Road on and off ramps
  • Thomas Road off ramp

If you are heading to Downtown from the southbound Loop 101 during this time period, exit at Chaparral or McDowell roads. If you are leaving the Downtown area and wish to access the southbound Loop 101, use Thomas or McDowell roads.

All southbound lanes on the Loop 101 Freeway will be closed from McDonald Drive to McDowell Road from 10 p.m. Friday, June 10, to 5 a.m. Monday, June 13. The following southbound ramps will be closed during the same dates and times:

  • Via de Ventura on ramp
  • Indian Bend Road/Talking Stick Way on ramp
  • McDonald Drive on ramp
  • Chaparral Road on and off ramps
  • Indian School Road on and off ramps
  • Thomas Road on and off ramps
  • McDowell Road off ramp

The closures are necessary to permit freeway paving.

Use Pima Road from McDonald Drive to McDowell Road, or Hayden Road from Via de Ventura to McKellips Road as detours.

Scottsdale’s Traffic Management Center will monitor traffic and adjust signals along these routes to help traffic flow.

City Council adopts fiscal year 2016/17 budget

The City Council unanimously passed next fiscal year’s budget and capital improvement plan Tuesday, June 7.

The budget balances modest projected increases in revenue with additional expenses in priority areas. The fiscal year 2016-2017 budget takes effect July 1. On Tuesday, June 21, the Council will host a public hearing and consider final adoption of tax levies.

Review the budget at ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “budget.”

Path improvements begin 90th Street transformation

One of the most diverse and dynamic areas of Scottsdale is beginning a facelift that will make getting around easier for commuters, residents and employees.

Work starts this month on the Mustang Transit Path Connection which will improve access from the Camelback Walk greenbelt to the Mustang Library. Sections of the multi-use path will be completely rebuilt in that area to make them compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Public art also will be incorporated into the path.

The path connection is the first phase of a larger project that will add a variety of transportation improvements along 90th Street, including transit amenities, a roundabout at the library entrance and a new traffic signal serving the HonorHealth Shea Medical Center driveway.

For more information and images of the planned improvements, visit ScottsdaleAZ.gov and search “Mustang Transit Center.”

Teens learn by doing through public safety academy

About 40 teens are gaining life skills while learning about future careers in law enforcement and fire services this week through the Scottsdale Public Safety Teen Academy.

The Scottsdale Police and Fire departments partner to produce the program, which is celebrating its 10th year.

Scheduled activities include firefighting skill stations, hands-only CPR awareness, basic first aid and triage, police riot control techniques, decision shooting scenarios and criminal investigations. The students also get to view tactical demonstrations by the Police K-9 Unit, Horse Patrol, SWAT and Bike teams.

Academy graduates often come back to serve as junior recruit training officers to assist their peers in the program. To learn more about the academy, visit ScottsdaleAZ.gov and search “teen academy.”
