Temperatures are on the rise – obey hiking and hydration rules. Play it safe when hiking: Take a buddy. Hydrate the day before you go. Bring plenty of water and your phone. Tell friends and family where you are heading and when you plan on returning.

Fix a Leak Week is March 20-26. Leaky faucets can waste up to 10,000 gallons of water a year … enough to fill a backyard swimming pool. Learn how to check for and fix leaks in and around your home by reading “Find and Fix Leaks that are Draining Your Budget.”

EVENTS

Get an insider’s view of baseball and the American Dream. Journalist, photographer and pop culture icon Tabitha Soren presents a unique perspective on baseball Sunday, March 19, at Scottsdale’s Civic Center Library. Soren will discuss her photo book, “Fantasy Life: Baseball and the American Dream,” at 4:30 p.m. in the library’s auditorium, 3839 N. Drinkwater Blvd.

Museum of the West presents “Ranching on the High Desert: Five Generations, One Family. Nevada rancher Anna Fallini-Berg and photojournalist Jeff Scheid provide insight into the experience of sustaining a 647,000-acre cattle ranch over five generations. The program runs from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, March 31, at the Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West.

Snakes alive. As temperatures climb past the 80s, one thing is for sure … snakes come out of hibernation. Keep your distance if you see a snake and never step where you can’t see. Get more safety tips.

Nominations open for Scottsdale Spirit Awards. Recognize a home or business that contributes to a neighborhood aesthetically or socially, or a place that has a history of giving back to the community. Nominees need to be located from Indian Bend Road south to the city limits. Nominations are due Friday, March 31.

Submit photos for railroad park contest. Amateur and professional photographers – grab your cameras and head to McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park to capture what makes it one of the most unique attractions in the Valley. Photos must be submitted by 1:45 a.m. Saturday, April 1.

Library looking for summer teen volunteers. Those 14-17 years old can apply to volunteer at libraries starting April 1. Participants will help with the Summer Reading Program.

PROGRAMS & SERVICES

Learn how to create a garden and landscape suitable for our desert environment. Attend a variety of workshops for Garden Week, March 27-April 1, at Scottsdale Public Libraries.

Prolific musician, writer, journalist, actor and activist takes the stage at arts center. Henry Rollins appears at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 30, at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. The program is part of the Out@SMoCA series which celebrates Arizona’s LGBTQ community and its support of contemporary art in Scottsdale.

Civic Center Library hosts War World I series. Just about 100 years ago, on April 6, 1917, the United States entered into World War I. Learn about various aspects of the war by attending three free programs: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, April 6, 13 and 20.
