April is Water Awareness Month. Celebrate Water Awareness Month by learning how to save water both indoors and out. Take a free water efficiency class, request free landscaping and leak brochures, explore the Scottsdale Xeriscape Garden at Chaparral Park, and visit Arizona Water Awareness for valleywide water events and tips.  Parks & Rec’s summer class list and brochure hits the streets early April. Get details on summer camps, recreation programs and classes, special events, senior programs, fall afterschool programs, facility and pool schedules, park listings and more. ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “recreation classes”

 Veg out at the Old Town Farmers Market in April. Buy fresh vegetables, fruits and creative crafts at Scottsdale’s Old Town Farmers Market.  It’s held 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays through June 10. The market is in the public parking lot at 3806 N. Brown Ave. Facebook.com

 Protect your identity by attending “Shred It” event, April 1. Bring your personal and/or commercial documents to the “Shred It” event from 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday, April 1, in the Wal-Mart parking lot, 15355 N. Northsight Blvd. A $3 per box donation is suggested. MyPosa.org

 Attend season’s final Sunday A’Fair outdoor concert April 2. Listen to the Valley’s top musicians and experience an arts-and-crafts market.  Celebrate Earth Day with citywide litter pickup. Celebrate Earth Day 2017 and keep Scottsdale “Clean and Scenic” as part of the Keep Scottsdale Beautiful event Saturday, April 22.  Scottsdale Stadium hosts Girls Night Out. Ladies can enjoy a night out from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, April 22. Enjoy a chick flick, indulge in some well-deserved pampering and grab a nosh from a food truck. ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “Girls Night Out”

 Drowning is no joke – get pool safety information. “April Pools Day” features drowning prevention information, a mock rescue, interactive booths, games and raffles. It runs from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 23, at Eldorado Aquatic and Fitness Center. ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “April Pools Day”

 Scottsdale becomes a Golden Rule City. Help celebrate this recognition at 7:30 a.m. Friday, April 28, at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. Golden Rule cities encourage residents to treat each other the way they would like to be treated – encouraging more kindness, empathy and civility. ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “diversity”

 Borrow landscape equipment for neighborhood cleanups. Grab a pair of work gloves and your neighbors, and borrow a trailer loaded with landscape tools for a neighborhood cleanup. There’s also a roll off dumpster available to put yard waste in – and we’ll haul it away for free. ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “neighborhood cleanup”

 Organize a neighborhood block party. Get to know your neighbors, build relationships, promote neighborhood safety, create a sense of community and … have fun. The city loans block party equipment such as ice chests, traffic cones and pop-up canopies for free. ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “block parties”

 Curb address painting kits available for loan. The kit is free to use and includes stencils, masking tape, brushes and instructions. You supply the paint and elbow grease. ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “curb address painting”

 City information is just a phone call away by dialing 480-312-3111. Live operators provide the information you need or will forward your call to the correct department – from where to pay a traffic fine to where to park at a city event. The line is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

 Caution … native wildlife active in spring. Urban animals such as bobcats, coyotes, javelina, raccoons and skunks can sometimes be seen in neighborhoods this time of year. Help to discourage urban wildlife from living in your area by removing essentials of wildlife habitat such as water, food and shelter. AZGFD.gov, search “urban wildlife”

 Try these turf watering tips for April. Inspect your irrigation/sprinkler system to ensure it’s working properly. Water your turf areas deeply and thoroughly for best results. This time of year, Bermuda grass needs water only once a week and rye grass once every four to five days. Use our free watering guide or free online leak guide for more watering and leak tips.  Library looking for summer teen volunteers. Those 14-17 years old can apply to volunteer at libraries starting April 1. Participants will help with the Summer Reading Program. ScottsdaleLibrary.org

 Recycling makes cents. Recycling benefits us by preserving landfill space and by recovering and reusing nonrenewable resources. It also makes economic sense.
