Cave Creek Graduates Receive a Seal of Biliteracy for Spanish, French and Chinese

July 2015

CCUSD® just became the first school district in AZ to offer a Seal of Biliteracy for students reaching high levels of proficiency in Spanish, French or Mandarin Chinese (the 3 languages that cover 80% of the world). Forty-one graduating seniors received a Seal of Biliteracy affixed to their diplomas and annotated on their transcripts. This is a seal that recognizes students’ ability to communicate and collaborate with others far beyond our borders. There are 9 states that already have official, state- endorsed Seals of Biliteracy and 14 other states with pending legislation or are in the early stages (map: http://sealofbiliteracy.org/) At the federal level, an amendment has been proposed to H.R.5 that would establish a grant program to support interested states to begin or improve their own Biliteracy Seal programs for high school seniors.
