Walking in Beauty: Reflections

 By Glen B. Jenks

Anything that is beautiful becomes twice as beautiful when we see it reflected off of some clear, shiny surface. Actually, reflections are all around us most of the time, but we only pay attention to a small fraction of them. Reflections can be found in many places in addition to the obvious places, like mirrors or water. They can be found in the sunglasses of a friend you are talking to, on the wall of a building with reflective glass, even in a spoon. The list is almost endless.  Take a moment to stop where you are and look around you for anything that shows a reflection; then examine it. As you do so you may find that you are “Walking in Beauty.” Here are some examples of images of the reflections I have that I would like to share.

Maroon Belles, near Aspen, Colorado

We had only one morning at Maroon Belles, near Aspen, Colorado. We set up our tripods before sunrise and waited for the light, hoping that the lake would be still, so that I could capture the reflection that is essential to this image. Our hopes were rewarded

Reflection of ride in windo at State Fair.

Glass walls are great opportunities for reflections. This photo was taken at the Arizona State Fair.

Duck and its reflection in the water

At the Phoenix Zoo this Duck was sitting on this log and the the light created this soft reflection in the water.

White Mexican resort buildings reflection in pool

This is the pool at a resort we stayed at in Huatulco, Mexico. The reflection of the white buildings in the blue pool created an irresistible reflection

Reflection of table

This table is set on dry concrete. But I was able to position myself to capture a reflection that makes the table appear to be sitting in the water.

A few years ago I attended the wedding and reception of a friend. Each table at the reception had this for the centerpiece. The multiple reflections of light and color caught my eye.

Sunrise at Bosque del Apache, New Mexico

The most dramatic sunrise I have ever experienced is this one that occurred at Bosque del Apache, NWR, New Mexico

Take the time to notice the reflections that you pass as you “Walk in Beauty.”
