Volunteers Create Bowls Galore for Empty Bowls Project

By A Peek at the Peak

It’s impressive what generous, talented people can do when they come together for a good cause. Volunteers who participated in the recent Sonoran Art League Painted Bowls workshop have made or glazed more than 2,000 bowls that will be donated to this year’s Empty Bowls Project.

During the months of June and July, the Sonoran Arts League conducted workshops at its Arts Learning Studio 7100 E Cave Creek Road in Cave creek. Each workshop was led by an instructor and included instruction in bowl making. No experience was required to participate. The workshop was free to all participants and all materials were provided. According to the Cait Hubie, Executive Director, Sonoran Arts League, the nonprofit has been creating and donating bowls to the Desert Foothills Food Bank Empty Bowls Project for two decades. However, this is the first time it has conducted the workshops and provided education. The results have been stunningView with more than 2000 bowls produced and more than 850 members and friends pitching in over the last year. Workshop participants ranged from grandparents in their 80s to children as young as five years of age.

Fortunately, North Scottsdale artist Judy Conklin volunteered to participate in two of the workshops. In addition to shaping, painting and glazing several bowls, she took photographs.  View Workshop Photographs
