The Column “By and For” Peak Readers – “Get Out of Your Room”

It’s good to “get our of your room” but don’t try this. This 1948 photograph shows Eagle Scout Lee Pedrick jumping the chasm that splits the summit of Pinnacle Peak. Ed. (Courtesy of Katchina Archives.}

What activity do you participate in that has provided change of pace, a change of scenery, a fresh start, perhaps an opportunity to make new friends and acquaintances or serve the community.

How do you escape “the room.” Do you volunteer for a nonprofit organization? Take a trip? Go shopping in Scottsdale? Do all of the above?  Let The Peak know. Email a few pictures and words to thepeak@gppaaz.org.

Get Out of Your Room! – Make a New Friend and Travel

By Les Conklin

It must have been at least two years since I last spoke to Denny Liddell.   About 10 days ago, I bumped into him  at the Safeway at Scottsdale and Pinnacle Peak Roads. Many Peak readers will know Denny as the photographer who donated so many incredible wildlife images to The Peak over the years.

I asked Denny what he had been up to. He reached for his cell phone and began happily showing me images from two recent trips that he had taken with Marsha Bedford, a best friend and travelling buddy.

I invited Denny to drop by my home and we continued to review the photos that he had taken during the two trips.  The result is the article and photo summaries below.

Get Out of Your Room – Adventure to Langara Fishing Lodge in northern British Columbia

By Marsha Bedford and Denny Liddell

Getting to the lodge involved a flight from Phoenix to Vancouver and then a 2nd flight to Masset, B.C., followed by a helicopter ride to the lodge.

We enjoyed a day seeing the sites in Vancouver.

After the flight to Masset, we boarded a helicopter for the trip to the lodge.

The Langara Fishing Lodge has all the amenities that you’d expect from a deluxe resort. The lodge is built on floating barges.

Fishing boats are ready and waiting.

Denny and Marsha heading for a day of salmon fishing.

Marsha celebrates winning the first day of the Ladies King (Chinook) Salmon Tournament, She also won the Catch-and-Release Tournament the next day.

Denny caught his limit of Chinooks.

Leaving the lodge early in the morning for another day of great fishing.

We saw whales and lots of sea lions. A huge sea lion stole its dinner off Marsha’s line.

Get Out of Your Room – Ride the Rails into the Copper Queen Mine

Marsha and Denny at the Copper Queen Mine, Bisbee, Arizona.

Retired miners guide the tour.

Signs along the tour’s route identify the Minor’s Ten Commandments.

Chalkboard summarizes the mine’s incredible productivity.

Display in the mine’s museum in Bisbee.

Bisbee is a colorful town.

We enjoyed our stay at Bisbee’s landmark hotel, The Copper Queen.

The following day, we visited Sonoita wine country.

The Sonoita Inn belongs to the owner of triple crown winner Secretariat.

The inn is filled with Secretariat memorabilia.
