âHidden in the Hillsâ is a yearly art studio tour for the Sonoran Arts League and this year we have 47 studios with 180 artists featured. The tour takes place on November 21-23 and 28-30 and you can find the studios by following the Hidden in the Hills map. All the studios are numbered and easy to find; artists are listed also by the studio number. The maps will be distributed to most hotels, country clubs and most venues throughout the area. If you canât get a map before November 21st, please call me or the league office. The Taylor’s, Colleen and Tom, who have the Carefree Fine Art Studio are the hosts of Studio #35 and have graciously included four other artists at their studio who will exhibit and sale a variety of art; each artist is unique in their style and what they create.
Colleen Taylor has moved around quite a bit during her life due to her husband’s career but she always found time for her own career and some form of creativity. She and husband Tom settled in Arizona in 1992 and she began painting a variety of images from floral, wildlife, abstract, whimsical and landscapes. She has been referred to as a âcoloristâ, as she loves to mix bright and vibrant colors that seem to jump off the page and hold you in a giant embrace. In 2012, the embrace grabbed the attention of the Arizona Art Alliance in both her oils and watercolors, and the Sonoran Arts League for her oils. She received Jury status from both organizations.
Tom Taylor is a masterful photographer who has been described as âa go getterâ. He has been taking photos since childhood while working in a variety of other interesting fields, such as, playing the trumpet, folk guitar and also singing with a folk group âMishaum Trioâ. Years later he worked in law enforcement and received a Masters from USC in criminal justice. Through out his career the camera was a constant companion. Toms work can be seen at the Arizona Art Alliance Gallery, The Desert Foothills Library where he was last years photo contest winner; heâs also at the Saddle Up Gallery. His photo of a hummingbird was one of those chosen for the cover of this years Hidden in the Hills booklet and map.
Marless Fellows is a renowned American Southwest artist whose goal is to portray what life was like as that American Cowboy of yesterday. She creates western oil paintings and teaches other artists in her âSaddles Upâ gallery in Cave Creek. If you visit the gallery you may find her teaching an aspiring artist at the easel. Marless also represents other artists in her gallery…a very busy lady! Marless is known for her vibrant colors and exquisite depictions of thecowboy way…experiences from her grandfather who broke horses in the cavalry and her own barrel racing days. She was one of only two women to have been chosen to represent the life of the cowboy at the Arizona Cowboy Poets Gathering in 2010 and 2014. Marless has written a book, âA Handshake is Enoughâ and will be having a book signing event on October 18th at Saddles Up gallery. She is also a juried member of the Sonoran Arts League and the Arizona Art Alliance.
Dyane Janney is a jeweler who has created her own medium, by combining several mediums together…fused glass mixed with the art of Repujado, or metal embossing, and then combining them with the love of metal wire, beads and fibers. Itâs fabulous art to wear and a bit of eye candy to admire! In her art, she has found the joy for life that she hopes you see in her Fused Glass Jewelry, Glassware, Repujado Journals and Keepsake Memory Boxes. Her journey is to create âpassionate pieces of happinessâ. She is a juried member of the Sonoran Arts League and the Arizona Art Alliance.
Scott Donars is a ceramicist and the name âtile artworksâ is a fitting description of Scottâs work. He is both a tile artisan and a sculptor. His tiles are all hand made and truly âone of a kindâ. His style is reminiscent of the Artis & Crafts movement, Art Deco, Prairie style, and Southwestern influences. Once the tiles are hand-carved, they are fired twice in a kiln to last a lifetime! Many of his collections are interchangeable and incorporate glass, metal, and semi-precious stones. As for his âartworkâ, many times they contain thousands of tiles creating  a unique style of mosaics. Scott has a diverse array of tile artworks including garden benches, wall hangings, murals, tabletop sculptures, 3ÂD wall hangings of dragonflies and butterflies and much more. Scott is also a member of the Sonoran Arts League.
Lastly, Natalie Keller has been painting since she was a young adult. She has traveled, lived and painted in numerous countries prior to moving to Arizona. Her work is displayed in homes in Switzerland, Germany, Singapore, France, as well as in Delaware, Hawaii and Arizona. She had one of her numerous exhibitions opened by the Ambassador of Singapore. She now paints western art and also writes this column for The Peek at the Peak magazine. She has a passion for art and she tries to project a story or mood with each painting that the viewer can appreciate. She is a member of the Sonoran Arts League, Scottsdale Artistsâ League, the American Women Artists and the Academy of Western Artists.
