Sneak Peeks: Summer Fun, Desert Edge, Honors

GPPA thanks everyone who entered the 2017 Summer Fun Contests, our volunteers, members, and supporters. We appreciate your support. We look forward to seeing you, your friends and family at the Summit of Summer Fun on Saturday, September 9th at 6 p.m. at the Summit Diner at 32531 N. Scottsdale Road (Summit “Target” shopping center).

We’re looking forward to learning more about Desert Edge and honoring contest winners and volunteers Edie and B.J. Shannon, Barbara Copeland. It’s going to be quite an evening and we are offering a bonus if you help us plan by registering in advance. .

Relaxing, Informal Dinner

The is no admission charge. Just order a minimum of $10 p/p in food and beverages from the menu at standard prices and tip the server as usual.

During dinner, a continuous. silent slide show will be shown on a large screen. The show will include:

• Stunning photographs of travel, landscapes, wildlife, local people and the Scenic Drive that were entered in the photo contest, plus winning photos from previous contests
• Images of Scenic Drive volunteers at work during 2016-2017 roadside cleanup season
• Images and architectural drawings of the proposed Desert Edge center.

Guests can vote for the “Diner’s Choice,” their favorite photograph that was not a contest winner and invest in a drawing for a one-night stay at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Resort.

Interesting, Fast-Paced Program

A brief program will follow dinner. The program will include:

• Presentation of awards to B.J. and Edie Shannon for Scenic Drive community service and Barbara Copeland for GPPA community service
• Desert Edge Q & A period and distribution of information by Desert Discovery Center Scottsdale staff
• Presentation of awards to Summer Fun Photography and Write Stuff Contest winners
• Drawing of winning ticket for stay at the Fairmont Princess. Proceeds from the drawing will help fund GPPA’s environmental educational grant to a graduating Cactus Shadows senior.

The program must conclude by 8:30. The restaurant closes at 9 p.m.

Registering in advance  is optional but helps us plan. If you register in advance, when you check-in at the event you will receive  one free drawing ticket (value $5). The drawing is for a one-night stay at the Fairmont Princess. The person who submits the advance registration  must be present at the time of the drawing to win.  No exceptions.

2017 is the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Greater Pinnacle Peak Association. It’s also the 54th anniversary of the establishment of the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive and 34th birthday of a Peek at the Peak magazine. Help us celebrate.

He served on the Scottsdale's Pride Commission, McDowell Sonoran Preserve Commission, the boards of several local nonprofits and was a founding organizer of the city's Adopt-A-Road Program.. Les is a volunteer guide at the Musical Instrument Museum.
