Charity Auctions at Greasewood Flat
By Dave Wells
One Sunday afternoon, Nancy and Dave Wells invited their friends, Jim and
Marian McIntyre of Mesa, to join them at Greasewood Flat for one of the famous charity auctions. At the time, Jim had a sister visiting from Florida, so we all headed up to Greasewood.
The bidding started, fast and furious, and everything was going for top dollar, especially a piece of greasewood autographed by Doc and Marge. As the afternoon progressed, a statue of a cactus appeared.
Jim’s sister started the bidding. “No one back in Florida would have ever seen a collectible like this,” she thought. She had the top bid when her brother, Jim, seated a few feet in back of her bid too, thinking he would get it for her. She increased her bid; Jim increased his bid; back and forth the bidding went.
Dave told Doc, “They’re bidding against each other. I don’t think they know it.”
Doc responded, “Let it go. It’s a charity thing.” And so, a cactus found a new home in Florida – at a pretty good price.
