Annual Veterans Day event salutes veterans of the Vietnam War

Scottsdale’s annual Veterans Day event highlights the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. The city has been designated a Vietnam War Commemorative Partner and as such, Scottsdale joins a grateful nation in thanking and honoring Vietnam veterans and their families.

The event takes place at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, 7301 E. Indian Bend Road. It is free and open to the public.

The city is asking Vietnam veterans who are attending the event to please RSVP so they can be properly recognized at the event.

Capt. Larry Ernst, United States Navy (ret.) and Top Gun instructor, will be the keynote speaker. Ernst flew two F-4 combat tours during the Vietnam War, was in one of the first Top Gun classes to learn advanced air combat maneuvers, served as a test pilot and was the last captain of the aircraft carrier USS Midway.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Arizona Band kicks off the program at 3 p.m. with a half-hour of patriotic music.

The Veterans Day program also will feature Scottsdale historian and veteran Joan Fudala, the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 432 Honor Guard and bugler Gil Gifford.

Refreshments are provided courtesy of Shamrock Foods Company and the Wildflower Bread Company.
