9/11 Memorial Tribute marks 15-year anniversary

The public is invited to visit a free 9/11 memorial tribute marking the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Activities run through Tuesday, Sept. 13, at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. A ceremony takes place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11. The tribute includes a mini-museum featuring the three-story National Unity Flag, photos and video, and memorabilia from retired New York fire and police personnel. Specially-built images of the Twin Towers and Pentagon will display memorial cards honoring those killed in the attacks. Get specific tribute details at ScottsdaleAz.gov, search “9/11.”

 

Mayor’s Constitution Day Contest deadline is Sept. 17

Mayor W.J. “Jim” Lane is again running the Constitution Day Contest to commemorate the Sept. 17, 1797, signing of the U. S. Constitution. This year’s contest includes an art/video category in addition to the essay category. Prizes will be awarded in both categories for three age groups: first through fifth grades, sixth through eighth grades and high school. Entries can be submitted by Saturday, Sept. 17, to any Scottsdale Public Library information desk or electronically to Kelli Kuester at kkuester@ScottsdaleAZ.gov. Contest details are available at ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “Constitution Contest.”

 

Northbound section of Loop 101 Freeway closed this weekend

A northbound section of the Loop 101 Freeway between Indian Bend Road and Shea Boulevard will be closed this weekend for paving.

The closure begins at 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, and continues until 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12.

The following northbound ramps will be closed as part of this project:

  • Chaparral Road on
  • McDonald Drive on
  • Indian Bend/Talking Stick Road on
  • Via de Ventura off/on
  • 90th Street off/on
  • Shea Boulevard off

Recommended detour routes include:

  • Indian Bend/Talking Stick, west to Pima Road, north to Shea, then west to freeway
  • Outer detour: off at McDonald, west to Hayden Road, north to Cactus Road, east to freeway

As part of the final work to complete this widening project, the Indian School Road/Loop 101 interchange will be restricted from Monday, Sept. 12, through Sept. 27. Indian School Road will be reduced to one lane at times in this area.

The northbound Loop 101 will be closed from 90th Street to Shea Boulevard Sept. 16-17.

El Zaribah Shrine Circus comes to WestWorld this weekend

The El Zaribah Shrine Circus comes to WestWorld Friday-Sunday, Sept. 9-11. There will be activities for the entire family – elephant and pony rides, clowns, jugglers, and all the things that make a circus fun – don’t miss it! WestWorld is at 16601 N. Pima Road. Scottsdale hosts Arizona SciTech Festival kickoff Sept. 15

Some of the latest developments in computers, robotics and medicine will be on display Sept. 15 when Scottsdale hosts the Arizona SciTech Festival kickoff. The event takes place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, 7380 E. Second St., and the Civic Center Library, 3839 N. Drinkwater Blvd. Highlights include more than 50 exhibitors from across the state and a variety of interactive learning sessions.

“Desert detectives – how science is preserving our last, best places” is one those sessions. It features speakers from the city, the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy and the Scottsdale Convention and Visitors Bureau discussing what we’re learning about the desert and how it can help us preserve and enhance our quality of life and tourism.

Many of the state’s top leaders in science, technology and education also will be on hand to share ideas, discuss projects and launch another season of festival events and activities. Session and ticket information will be available at AzSciTech.com.

  • ArtWalk – Visit many of the roughly 70 art galleries in Downtown Scottsdale, 7 to 9 p.m. every Thursday, year ’round, Scottsdale Arts District.
  • 365 Live – Live and local performers take to the streets of Downtown Scottsdale 365 times throughout the year, bringing an exciting new energy to the heart of the city. 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays. 480-980-6202.
  • Free Downtown Trolley – New & improved service! Runs every 10 minutes from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
  • Downtown Cultural Trolley Tours – 10:30 a.m. second Saturday of the month, Old Adobe Mission, Downtown Scottsdale. 480-634-6850. Free.
  • McDowell Sonoran Preserve – Hikes and educational programs – ongoing.
  • WestWorld hosts various horse shows and other events.

Love the desert? Pinnacle Peak Park is seeking volunteers Pinnacle Peak Park has a variety of volunteer opportunities available. It’s a great chance to get out in the  beautiful Sonoran Desert and share your knowledge about this special environment. To apply, fill out the city’s volunteer application. It’s available at ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “volunteer application.” Return the completed application to the Pinnacle Peak Park office at the trailhead or mail to P.O. Box 25089 Scottsdale, 85255. You can also email the application to kmarcum@scottsdaleaz.gov. Applications are accepted up until Oct. 1. Training will begin later that month. Contact the park staff at 480-312-0990 for more information on volunteer opportunities or the application process.

The purpose of the ordinance is to maintain a comfortable environment for others enjoying the park and adjacent landowners, while still allowing you to listen to your favorite music. Call Facility Booking at 480-312-7707 to learn how you can get a permit to use speakers or have amplified sound while at one of Scottsdale’s parks and community centers.

Register for free landscape workshops and Xeriscape Garden tour

Learn how to create beautiful landscapes while saving water at our free fall workshops. Topics include plant selection, irrigation controller programming, and drip irrigation system design and maintenance. Workshops are held at the Civic Center Library, 3839 N Drinkwater Blvd. Also, take a tour of the Scottsdale Xeriscape Garden at Chaparral Park with its caretaker Bill Casenhiser. Registration is required and seating is limited. Visit ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “workshops” for schedules and registration.

 

Cab Connection serves seniors needing transportation

Scottsdale seniors 65 and older can get assistance through the Cab Connection taxi voucher program. Cab Connection provides seniors a transportation option to fit their schedule. The program is flexible and relatively affordable. Participants may request up to 16 one-way reduced-fare vouchers per month. Dispose of your brush and bulk

The city provides monthly brush and bulk item collection offering residents a convenient way to dispose of items too large for refuse containers. Place brush and bulk items out for pickup by 5 a.m. Monday the week of scheduled service. Here’s when we’ll be in your neighborhood:

  • Service Area #2 – Bell Road to Indian Bend Road, west of the 101 Freeway; and Dynamite Boulevard to Happy Valley Road: Week of Sept. 12.
  • Service Area #3 – Indian Bend Road to Thomas Road; and Happy Valley Road to Pinnacle Peak Road: Week of Sept. 19.
  • Service Area #4 – Thomas Road to McKellips Road; and Pinnacle Peak Road to Thunderbird Road (including McDowell Mountain Ranch): Week of Sept. 26.
  • Service Area #1 – Thunderbird Road to Indian Bend Road, east of the 101 Freeway; and Dynamite Boulevard to northern city limits: Week of Oct. 3.
