Most city offices closed Monday for Memorial Day. Although most city offices will be closed Monday, May 29, for Memorial Day, the city will still pick up your trash. Simply place your container in the usual collection spot by 5 a.m. the morning of collection or the evening before.
Donate items for senior centers’ “Beat the Heat” program. Contribute new reusable water bottles, nutritional supplement drinks, bottled water, small healthy snacks, unused personal hygiene items, stamps and grocery store gift cards. Drop off donations by early June to the Via Linda Senior Center, 10440 E. Via Linda.
“Click It or Ticket.” Scottsdale Police will be stepping up enforcement and reminding all drivers to buckle up. This national campaign takes place through Sunday, June 4.

EVENTS
Listen to the music at railroad park’s free Sunday night concert. Rock band Pearl Ridge takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 28, at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park. Bring a blanket, chairs and snacks – or buy munchies on-site. Train and carousel tickets are $2 each with kids 2 and younger riding free with a paying adult. Concerts continue through July 2.
Veterans groups host Memorial Day ceremonies Monday. American Legion Post 44, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 22, Elks Lodge 2148, Knights of Columbus and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3513 are hosting two ceremonies Monday, May 29. The first begins at 8 a.m. at Camelback Cemetery, 6800 E. McDonald Road; and the second at 10 a.m. at the Chaplain Statue at Scottsdale City Hall. Detour Company Theatre presents The Addams Family: A New Musical, June 2-4. The Detour Company Theatre cast, comprised of adults with developmental and other challenges, takes the stage at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. Admission is free.
Scottsdale Museum of the West hosts Western Wednesdays in June. Kids 6-14 will learn about cowboys/cowgirls, animals of the West, Native American crafts, life in a covered wagon, and outlaws and lawmen. Activities take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. RSVP to education@scottsdalemuseumwest.org.

Scottsdale is home to a pair of Heritage Trees. Every plant has roots. Not many, however, have roots that run as deep into local history as the pair of pistache trees on Paul Messinger’s Downtown Scottsdale property. These trees were imported from Persia in 1932. Read the full story.
Discounted family pool passes available through Monday. The family pass allows unlimited public swim, lap swim and fitness center visits from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Pass cost depends on pool location.
Design the official poster for the 2017 Scottsdale International Film Festival. One winner will receive two VIP passes to the festival, five copies of the printed poster, name recognition in 25,000 printed programs, and bragging rights. Entries must be submitted electronically via email or on the festival website by Friday, July 7.

Discover creative ways to reuse materials at free Green Building lecture. Repurposed materials save money and natural resources. The free program runs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 1, at the Granite Reef Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road.
Civic Center Library’s Birdfeeder Workshop a hit for all ages. Participants will use recycled materials and bird seeds to put together their own creation. The activity takes place outside so be sure to bring water and a hat. The free program is from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday, June 5.
Be part of the muddy tradition at this year’s Mighty Mud Mania. Come sling mud at this year’s Mighty Mud Mania from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 10, at Chaparral Park, 5401 N. Hayden Road. This event offers muddy obstacles for people of all ages and ability levels.
