Stamp out hunger Saturday. Help restock Scottsdale’s Vista del Camino Food Bank by participating in the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Place nonperishable food items near your mailbox Saturday, May 13, and your letter carrier will pick them up and deliver to food banks.

City seeks community input on DC Ranch Neighborhood Park. Scottsdale is exploring a partnership with Great Hearts Academies that could accelerate construction of the DC Ranch Neighborhood Park. Share your thoughts at an open house from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, at the DC Ranch Homestead Community Center, 18600 N. 98^th St.

Airport Operations Center open for business and earns LEED Silver. This new center is the hub for monitoring daily operations – safety, security and maintenance of the airfield. This building is a state-of-the-art facility and also environmentally friendly. The U.S. Green Building Council recognized the center with the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certification. The award recognizes the project for its sustainable, green building qualities.

EVENTS

Date night – Scottsdale style, takes place Saturday. Looking for a fun night out with friends or your significant other? This unique event, held from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at Scottsdale Stadium, is for those 21 and older. It features tours, gourmet food trucks, beer and wine, and a movie to cap off the night.

Celebrate Mother’s Day at railroad park’s free Sunday night concert. Eagle’s tribute band, One of These Nights, takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 14, at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park. Bring a blanket, chairs and snacks – or buy munchies on-site. Train and carousel tickets are $2 each with kids 2 and younger riding free with a paying adult.

Attend free Scottsdale Philharmonic concert May 21. Attend this professional symphony orchestra concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 21, at Scottsdale Bible Church, 7601 E. Shea Blvd. The group receives support through the city’s Community Event Funding program.

Scottsdale welcomes “Gathering of Heroes.” They have earned our nation’s highest military decoration for bravery and sacrifice and they continue to give back. Six Medal of Honor recipients are in Scottsdale this week supporting nonprofit events. To recognize their service, Mayor Jim Lane at Tuesday’s City Council meeting proclaimed May 8-15 as “Gathering of Heroes Week” in Scottsdale.

Help Scottsdale Public Art expand Canal Convergence programs. Public Art is proposing an extensive expansion of the Canal Convergence experience and related programming for the USA Today-sponsored “A Community Thrives” grant. Vote every day through Friday, May 12, under the “Arts and Culture” category.

Help residents in need through Scottsdale Cares. Simply pay the “grand total” on your monthly city utility bill and a dollar will go toward Scottsdale Cares, the city’s voluntary utility bill donation program. One hundred percent of the proceeds are distributed to nonprofits that help thousands of neighbors in need.

PROGRAMS & SERVICES

Seniors invited to learn how to design decals and stickers. Two sessions are available; attend either one: 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at Appaloosa Library; or 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, at Civic Center Library. This free program is sponsored by “Senior Makers @ SPL,” a grant-funded initiative to provide arts and technology programs to seniors.

Library offers free program on opiate abuse. The nonprofit Community Bridges provides a presentation about local abuse trends, signs and symptoms of abuse and local resources. The free program is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, at Civic Center Library.

Water Conservation hosts drip irrigation workshop. Discover simple tricks for designing, installing and maintaining an efficient drip irrigation system. The free program runs from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at Civic Center Library.

Chaparral Pool hosts free family fun May 20. Kick off the summer at “Big Splash at Chap” from 3 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 20. The event features swim lessons, refreshments, safety demonstrations and games. Cap off the event with the movie “Moana.”

Scottsdale offers free swim lessons May 21. Take part in a free swim lesson at McDowell Mountain Ranch Aquatic and Fitness Center. New Scottsdale swim instructors are conducting these lessons to help them refine skills. Space is limited. Call McDowell Mountain Ranch at 480-312-6677 to register.

Earn prizes and praise through library’s Summer Reading Program. Studies show that summer reading programs help children retain and improve reading skills. The fun-for-the-whole-family program runs June 1-Aug. 1. Call 480-312-READ (7323) for more information.

Cool down this May at one of the city’s public pools. City aquatic centers are open various times on weekends this month and on Memorial Day. Each facility offers unique pool amenities – check out all of them!
