HEADLINES

Scottsdale earns high marks in citizen survey. Most Scottsdale residents are pleased with where they live and with services the city provides, according to the National Citizen Survey. Respondents gave the city high marks as a place to live, with 98 percent rating Scottsdale “excellent” or “good.” The survey results provide insight into how residents feel about their community, their local government and their interactions with both.

Students can apply for college scholarships. The Scottsdale Community Collaborative Youth Scholarship Program is accepting applications for the 2017-18 academic year. The program will award $2,500 scholarships to high school seniors who enroll in an accredited two-year or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school in Arizona.

Catch a family-friendly “triple play” Saturday, March 4. The Scottsdale Giant Race begins at 7 a.m. at Scottsdale Stadium. That’s followed by the Scottsdale Public Library’s Ultimate Play Date from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the east side of the Civic Center Mall. Scottsdale’s award-winning Spring Training Festival celebrates the start of the Cactus League and another season of America’s Pastime from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the west side of the mall.

Missed Mayor W.J. “Jim” Lane’s Feb. 22 State of the City Address? Scottsdale Video Network replays the program at 8 a.m. and noon, and 4, 7 and 10 p.m. Mondays; at 10 a.m., and 2, 6 and 9 p.m. Wednesdays; and 9 a.m., and 1, 5, 8 and 11 p.m. Saturdays. EVENTS

Attend free Scottsdale Concert Band performance Sunday. Scottsdale’s own community symphonic band will perform George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 5, at the Chaparral High School Auditorium, 6935 E. Gold Dust Ave. The 75-member community band is in its 39^th season.

Museum of the West presents Nicole Carson Bonilla: A Cowgirl’s Legacy. Carson Bonilla shares exclusive and unforgettable family photos and video as she discusses the richness of a cowgirl’s western family traditions and how she works to positively impact the lives of tomorrow’s westerners. The program takes place from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, at the museum.

Students invited to Junior Science Festival. This event features a self-guided adventure through more than 15 interactive, educational booths which feature a look into the mysteries of the Sonoran Desert. Many activities tie to STEM curriculum taught in Arizona schools. The program runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, March 10, at Lost Dog Wash Trailhead in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

Scottsdale Arts Festival takes place March 10-12. Explore the works of nearly 200 nationally-acclaimed exhibiting artists at the annual Scottsdale Arts Festival March 10-12 on Scottsdale’s Civic Center Mall. Enjoy toe-tapping Arizona bands and entertainers, mouth-watering gourmet food trucks and lots of other fun.

Mayor’s Youth Council offers insight into local government and civic responsibility. The city is recruiting high school sophomores, juniors and seniors for this program through Friday, March 31.

Enjoy the legends and lore of Scottsdale Spring Training. The Civic Center Library and the Scottsdale Historical Museum host free exhibits about the teams, players and baseball legends that have called Scottsdale home during spring training. Both exhibits are a short stroll from Scottsdale Stadium and are part of the Cactus League Legacy Trail, a self-guided tour of locations rich in baseball folklore and history.

PROGRAMS & SERVICES

Scottsdale Water’s free water efficiency workshop series is in full bloom. Attend Scottsdale Water’s 2017 workshops and learn about water-efficient lawn care, leak detection, proper pruning and more from plant and irrigation experts. Classes meet at the Granite Reef Senior Center, the Mustang Library and the Scottsdale Xeriscape Garden at Chaparral Park.

Protect your identity by attending “Shred It” event, Saturday. Bring your personal and/or commercial documents to the “Shred It” event from 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday, March 4, in the Wal-Mart parking lot, 15355 N. Northsight Blvd. A $3 per box donation is suggested.

Electronics Recycling Day is Saturday. Rid your home of unneeded electronics at Scottsdale’s Electronics Recycling Collection Day. Accepted items include computer, office and entertainment equipment. This free program runs 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at the city’s Corporation Yard, 9191 E. San Salvador.

Explore the unique Paris districts that inspired the Aimée Leduc book series. Join author Cara Black as she offers insights into her research process, being an outsider in France and her new novel “Murder on the Quai.” The free program is from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 9, at Civic Center Library, 3839 N. Drinkwater Blvd. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Master your interview skills, perfect your resume and meet hiring employers. The 2017 Sprint to Success event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, at Vista del Camino, 7700 E. Roosevelt St. The free program includes a continental breakfast and lunch.
