HEADLINES

Economic Development Department now an “Accredited Economic Development Organization.” Earning this accreditation tells the community and prospects that the city has attained a measure of excellence in economic development assuring that their trust is well-placed and their business is in good hands. Scottsdale is now the second Arizona organization to achieve this honor and the 58th in the nation – out of thousands of economic development organizations.

 

There’s a story behind the flagpole at Scottsdale’s Gateway Trailhead. Visitors to Scottsdale’s Gateway Trailhead will pass near an American Flag that carries its own special message about sacrifice and appreciation. One year ago, two young men were looking for a way to recognize veterans and their contributions. They particularly wanted to honor Brian Kennedy, the brother of a family friend and a Marine corporal who gave his life in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

EVENTS

Listen to the music at railroad park’s free Sunday night concert. Funk and rhythm and blues band Outside the Line takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 4, at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park. Bring a blanket, chairs and snacks – or buy munchies on-site. Train and carousel tickets are $2 each with kids 2 and younger riding free with a paying adult. Concerts continue through July 2.

 

Detour Company Theatre presents The Addams Family: A New Musical, June 2-4. The Detour Company Theatre cast, comprised of adults with developmental and other challenges, performs at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. Admission is free.

 

Be part of the muddy tradition at this year’s Mighty Mud Mania. Come sling mud at this year’s Mighty Mud Mania from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 10, at Chaparral Park. This event offers muddy obstacles for people of all ages and ability levels.

Scottsdale Museum of the West hosts Western Wednesdays in June. Kids 6-14 will learn about cowboys/cowgirls, animals of the West, Native American crafts, life in a covered wagon, and outlaws and lawmen. Activities take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. RSVP to education@scottsdalemuseumwest.org.

 

Fight the bite … from mosquitoes. Help eliminate and prevent mosquitoes from breeding by following these simple tips.

 

Beware of sneaky leaks … A leaky faucet can waste more than 10,000 gallons of water a year. Stop draining your budget and get step-by-step instructions on how to find and fix leaks.

 

Help reduce drowning by becoming a swim mentor. Help people learn to swim.

 

Stop idling. Start breathing. Ozone, particulates and other tailpipe emissions damage lung tissue, diminish lung function and aggravate respiratory disease. Children and the elderly are especially vulnerable.

PROGRAMS & SERVICES

Musical Instrument Museum presents free program at library June 6. Museum representatives will highlight its global collection – including artifacts, costumes and objects that convey the diversity of music around the world. The free program begins at 6:30 p.m. at Civic Center Library.

 

Drop in to Eldorado Park for cards and games June 9-Aug. 4. Those 18 and older can drop in for scrabble, chess, cards and other fun activities from 9 a.m. to noon Fridays at the center, 2311 N. Miller Road.

 

Library hosts drop-in e-reader help for any device. Bring your device, the email address and password that you use to download applications along with your library card and PIN number to learn how to download e-books, e-audiobooks and stream video. View online calendar for days and locations.

 

“Carrie the Carpenter Builds a Better World” at Scottsdale libraries. Hear her tale of how the three little pigs make a better world as they build their homes and get rid of the big bad wolf. See a staff person before the start of the program to receive a number, which will be your child’s registration. Various dates, times and locations. Call 480-312-READ (7323) for more information.
