Headlines

Stay informed and be prepared for potential storms

Heavy monsoon wind and rains are always a possibility this time of year. Residents are urged to stay informed and be prepared for the threat of flooding and wind damage. During heavy rains, the safest strategy is to stay in place – remain in your home or place of business. Don’t travel unless you have to. Obey all signs and avoid low-lying areas. Do not cross running water. There are a number of ways to stay informed about storm activity. Updates are available on city Twitter accounts: @ScottsdalePD and @ScottsdaleAZgov. The city’s call center is also a good resource. It is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays to answer questions and share storm information at 480-312-3111. For more storm tips and resources, visit ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “monsoon.”

August is Drowning Impact Awareness Month

Arizona consistently ranks among the worst states for drowning. Summer brings increased incidents for children and adults. July alone saw nearly 30 incidents of drownings or near drownings. And August is ranked an especially “high risk” time. But drowning is preventable. Show your support and commitment to water safety by wearing a purple ribbon during August. Get one at any Scottsdale fire station or aquatic center. Learn about drowning prevention at ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “drowning.”

City needs Downtown Ambassadors

Are you people oriented? Excited about Downtown Scottsdale? Then consider volunteering as a Downtown Scottsdale Ambassador. Ambassadors are asked to fulfill three-one hour shifts at one of our information sidewalk carts. For more information on how you can get involved, call 480-312-2342 or email jracine@ScottsdaleAZ.gov. Fill out an application online at ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “ambassador.”

Scottsdale’s Marine Mural to receive some TLC

Last September, the Marine Corps created a visual landmark in Scottsdale commemorating its service and sacrifice. Sun, wind and rain have faded portions of the mural, located just north of the Civic Center Library, 3839 N. Drinkwater Blvd. But a contingent of current and former Marines will give the artwork some fresh paint and tender loving care Friday, Aug. 5.

The mural was dedicated as part of the Valley’s Marine Week, a program the military service conducts each year in different locations to connect with the public and showcase what they do for the nation. The Scottsdale mural depicts iconic Marine images, plus a variety of Marine air and ground units training in an Arizona landscape of desert buttes and mountains.

Besides a group of active duty Marines from Yuma, the maintenance team will include volunteers from the Phoenix Marine Corps Recruiting Station and the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. Other community groups are also pitching in. The Scottsdale Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Scottsdale Hyatt House have donated lodging for the Yuma-based Marines while they are working on the mural. Learn more at ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “marine mural.”

For Your Information

Parks and Recreation fall class registration begins Monday

Scottsdale Parks and Recreation leisure classes present something for everyone. Classes offer affordable prices, experienced instructors and convenient times and locations. Choose from our wide range of classes whether you’re looking to get active and fit, learn a new skill or polish up an existing one. Registration begins at 7 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8, for residents and 7 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, for nonresidents. To register and see what’s available, visit http://Recreation.ScottsdaleAZ.gov.

Early voting takes place at City Hall

In-person early voting for the primary election continues from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, through Friday, Aug. 26, at Scottsdale City Hall, 3939 N. Drinkwater Blvd. While Scottsdale will not hold an Aug. 30 primary election, we are still serving as an early voting location site. Only two candidates filed to run for mayor and four filed to run for three City Council seats by the June 1 deadline, making a Scottsdale primary election unnecessary. In addition to the mayor and council races, Scottsdale voters will decide a proposed amendment to the City Charter. We’re expecting a higher than normal voter turnout. You can avoid long lines by not waiting until the last week to in-person early vote. Also, many Scottsdale residents receive early ballots. But in the last election fewer than 30,000 were actually voted and returned. Remember to return your postage-paid early ballot. Find more information about Scottsdale’s 2016 election, including links to voter registration and early ballot requests at ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “elections.”

Focus on safety as students head back to school

Most Scottsdale schools start Monday, Aug. 8, and that means more cars, bicyclists and pedestrians will be on the streets. Remember, it’s everyone’s responsibility to know the rules of the road whether you’re walking, bicycling or driving.

Registration, exhibit space available for Arizona SciTech Festival kickoff

Registration is open and exhibit space is available for the Sept. 15 Arizona SciTech Festival kickoff. The kickoff takes place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, 7380 E. Second St., and the Civic Center Library, 3839 N. Drinkwater Blvd. Some of the latest developments in computers, robotics and medicine will be on display at the event. Highlights include more than 60 exhibitors from across the state and a variety of interactive learning sessions. Many of the state’s top leaders in science, technology and education also will be on hand to share ideas, discuss projects and launch another season of festival events and activities. To get more information or to register, visit AZSciTech.com.
