Headlines

Loop 101 weekend closures, Aug. 19-22

The Loop 101 Pima Freeway will be closed for paving from 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 22, northbound from Chaparral Road to Via de Ventura. The following northbound ramps will be closed:

  • Thomas Road on
  • Indian School Road on
  • Chaparral Road on
  • McDonald Drive on and off
  • Via de Ventura off

As part of this closure, some ramps will be closed Friday to prepare for the paving. The following northbound ramps will be closed from midnight to 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19:

  • Chaparral Road on
  • McDonald Drive on and off
  • Indian Bend Road on and off

This project will widen the Loop 101 between the Red Mountain 202 north to Shea Boulevard. Construction is expected to be completed this fall. Learn more at AZDot.gov.

 

Scottsdale Water earns international accolades for exceptional performance

A global partnership of water sector organizations has named Scottsdale Water a recipient of the inaugural Utility of the Future Today Recognition Program. The National Association of Clean Water Agencies, the Water Environment Federation, the Water Environment and Reuse Foundation and the WateReuse Association comprise the partnership organizations. Scottsdale Water demonstrated its commitment to the program concept of more efficient operations and a progression toward full resource recovery with enhanced productivity, sustainability and resiliency. Specifically, Scottsdale was recognized for fostering an “Organizational Culture of the Future” and for exceptional achievement in the areas of water reuse, energy efficiency and community partnering and engagement. Events

Via Linda Senior Center hosts “Endless Summer Dance” Aug. 23

Successfully survive the season by attending the “Endless Summer Dance” at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, at the Via Linda Senior Center, 10440 E. Via Linda. The event features live entertainment, refreshments and raffle prizes. Cost is $5 for Scottsdale residents; and $7 for nonresidents. Call 480-312-5810 to register.

  • ArtWalk – Visit many of the roughly 70 art galleries in Downtown Scottsdale, 7 to 9 p.m. every Thursday, year ’round, Scottsdale Arts District.
  • 365 Live – Live and local performers take to the streets of Downtown Scottsdale 365 times throughout the year, bringing an exciting new energy to the heart of the city. 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays. 480-980-6202.
  • Free Downtown Trolley – New & improved service! Runs every 10 minutes from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
  • Downtown Cultural Trolley Tours – 10:30 a.m. second Saturday of the month, Old Adobe Mission, Downtown Scottsdale. 480-634-6850. Free.
  • McDowell Sonoran Preserve – Hikes and educational programs – ongoing.
  • WestWorld hosts various horse shows and other events.

Flood Control District invites public to learn about flooding, solutions

The public is invited to learn about potential flooding and solutions for areas in Scottsdale, north Tempe and Paradise Valley. The meetings are from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, at Paradise Valley Town Hall, 6401 E. Lincoln Drive; and 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, at the Granite Reef Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road. Information presented will be the same at both meetings. The Flood Control District of Maricopa County is hosting the meetings as part of a study called the Lower Indian Bend Wash Area Drainage Master Study/Plan. The study area covers 27 square miles bounded by Shea Boulevard to the north, Indian Bend Wash to the east, Salt River to the south, and the 56th Street alignment to the west. Scottsdale’s Museum of the West named best in nation

True West magazine ranks Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West as the top Western art museum in the country. True West recognized the museum for its “extraordinary exhibitions and dedication to Western art and culture.” The museum celebrates the art, history, culture and unique stories of the 19 states comprising the American West. It features regularly changing exhibitions, entertaining events, gallery tours, and engaging activities that bring to life the unique stories of the people, places and events that embody our Western heritage. The 43,000-square-foot, two-story museum opened in January 2015 in Downtown Scottsdale at 3830 N. Marshall Way. Learn more about the museum at ScottsdaleMuseumoftheWest.org.

 

Programs & Services

Get schooled with Scottsdale Water’s free education programs

Are your kids learning about thunderstorms, desert plants, dams or water chemistry in the classroom? If not, we can help. A free educational program is available to schools in the Scottsdale Water service area. Presenter Linda Dee will fascinate learners all while incorporating Arizona State Science Standards. Teachers also can request free booklets from Project WET’s “Kids in Discovery” and Channing Bete Co. as a valuable addition to the classroom. Library offers programs for preschoolers

The little ones don’t have to be left out now that the “older” kids are back in school. The library offers a variety of free programs for preschoolers – from Tiny Tot Time (0-24 months old) to Fun with Math and Science (3-5 year olds). Some programs require registration. Dispose of your brush and bulk

The city provides monthly brush and bulk item collection offering residents a convenient way to dispose of items too large for refuse containers. Place brush and bulk items out for pickup by 5 a.m. Monday the week of scheduled service. Here’s when we’ll be in your neighborhood:

  • Service Area #4 – Thomas Road to McKellips Road; and Pinnacle Peak Road to Thunderbird Road (including McDowell Mountain Ranch): Weeks of Aug. 22.
  • Service Area #1 – Thunderbird Road to Indian Bend Road, east of the 101 Freeway; and Dynamite Boulevard to northern city limits: Week of Aug. 29.
  • Service Area #2 – Bell Road to Indian Bend Road, west of the 101 Freeway; and Dynamite Boulevard to Happy Valley Road: Week of Sept. 12.
  • Service Area #3 – Indian Bend Road to Thomas Road; and Happy Valley Road to Pinnacle Peak Road: Week of Sept. 19.
