City to name Brown’s Ranch Trailhead amphitheater in honor of Carolyn Allen. Among her most notable accomplishments during 16 years as a state legislator was Allen’s unwavering support for legislation that led to the acquisition and preservation of more than 15,000 acres of state trust land within Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve. “The Honorable Carolyn Allen Amphitheater” will be dedicated at a public event at 10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, at the Brown’s Ranch Trailhead. It will be a permanent symbol of her legacy not only as a preservation advocate, but also as a champion for the arts, health care and Arizona.
Mayor, councilmembers start new terms. Incoming Mayor W.J. “Jim” Lane, and City Councilmembers Suzanne Klapp, Virginia Korte and Guy Phillips will start their new four-year terms Tuesday. The oath of office ceremony takes place at 4 p.m. Jan. 17, at Scottsdale City Hall, 3939 N. Drinkwater Blvd.

Take a look at the new Indian School Park playground. It boasts two play areas; one for kids ages 3 to 5, the other for those 6 to 12. It also includes manufactured wood fibers in place of sand, which is ADA compliant – enabling access to all areas of the playground.
EVENTS
Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon Series runs this weekend. The Rock ‘N’ Marathon is a relatively flat course that runs through Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe. In addition to the full- and half-marathons, this running series also offers a 5K, 10K and Kids’ Race. Road closure information is available on the marathon website.
Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction rolls in Saturday. Hundreds of the world’s finest collector automobiles and thousands of spectators will assemble for this year’s Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction. The auction is at WestWorld, 16601 N. Pima Road.
Drawn to art? Check out Celebration of Fine Art. Watch art as it’s being created as more than 100 artists set up working studios at Celebration of Fine Art, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily Jan. 14-March 26. Housed in the big white tents southwest of Hayden Road and the Loop 101, Celebration presents a variety of art in all styles – from traditional to contemporary.
Sunday A’Fair minifestivals begin Sunday on the Civic Center Mall. Sunday A’Fair features free outdoor concerts by the Valley’s top musicians, an arts-and-crafts market and fun activities for the entire family. The concerts take place from noon to 4 p.m. most Sundays through April 2, on the Civic Center Mall.
Gooding and Company Scottsdale Auction revs up Jan. 18-21. Many styles of classic cars from various eras will be showcased at the Gooding and Company Scottsdale Auction at Scottsdale Fashion Square, 4700 N. Scottsdale Road. View the cars Wednesday-Saturday, Jan. 18-21; viewing and bidding take place Friday and Saturday, Jan. 20-21.
Bring your favorite four-legged friend to Paws in the Park. Talk to experienced pet professionals, learn about dog adoptions, win prizes and hear entertainment – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Chaparral Park’s off leash area. Dog food donations will be accepted and will benefit Vista del Camino’s Pet Pantry and rescue agencies.

Register for Community Emergency Response Training (CERT). Citizens can learn basic emergency response skills to better assist families, friends, neighbors and coworkers if a disaster strikes. Two free six-week sessions are available: Feb. 23-April 1 or Sept. 28-Nov. 4.
Library offers Senior Makers watercolor classes. Seniors are invited to paint with watercolors alongside professional artist and teacher Julie Pollard. Supplies are provided. Two sessions take place: 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Appaloosa Library and from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Civic Center Library.

Nurture yourself – take a free guided nature tour. Pinnacle Peak Park offers free guided nature tours at 10 a.m. Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays through March. Hike leaders provide insights into the plants, animals, history, geology and archaeology of the park and Scottsdale’s beautiful Sonoran Desert. The park is at 26802 N. 102nd Way.
