The Scottsdale Coalition for Airport Noise Abatement (SCANA) is a group of concerned citizens in Scottsdale and North Phoenix who are working to make sure we all have a say on issues that impact airplane noise, air pollution, and flight safety in our neighborhoods. Our goal is to require the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to adopt an approach to aircraft flight management for Sky Harbor and Scottsdale Airport that balances the needs of the traveling airlines, the public, and Northeast Valley residents.
The group’s objective is a plan that minimizes aircraft noise in residential neighborhoods to the maximum extent feasible, in a safe and environmentally sound manner.
The Problem
After the FAA implemented the NextGen program at Sky Harbor, flight paths were moved from the unpopulated McDowell Mountain Preserve to populated Scottsdale communities, which at busy times results in overflights 2,000 feet lower than the old paths and as often as every 90 seconds. The new NextGen routes also changed flight paths at Scottsdale Airport resulting in increased noise for nearby residents.
