Scottsdale launches a new green building lecture series featuring local speakers and experts on timely topics and issues involving the future of rooftop solar, green home renovations, toxicity in the home and workplace, edible landscapes, water resources, fresh air ventilation, combating summer heat and repurposing materials for reuse. The lectures are free and held the first Tuesday of each month (excluding January) from October, 2016 through June 2017, 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Scottsdale Granite Reef Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road (NW corner of McDowell and Granite Reef).

 

 

Feb. 2, 2017 – Living an Edible Landscape Life

Join urban gardeners as they share the benefits and how-to’s of growing your own healthy food, herbs, edible flowers and fruit trees in our desert environment. Learn about our planting and harvesting seasons. Find out about the wide range of community gardens available for you to participate in and how school gardens provide students with valuable skills.

March 2, 2017 – Doing Better with Less: Water Efficient Products and Treatment Alternatives

Did you know that in a residential setting, up to 65 percent of city-supplied potable water is used outdoors and 24 percent of indoor water is literally flushed down the toilet? Learn about high-efficiency water-conserving products and alternative water treatment systems.

April 6, 2017 – Guaranteed Fresh Air: How to Get It Indoors and Keep It

Besides open windows, homes built prior to 2012 get outside air through infiltration around doors, windows, and other penetrations. As homes become more energy efficient, however, there is less air exchange between outdoors and indoors. Hear about options for getting fresh air ventilation while keeping your home airtight and energy efficient.

May 4, 2017 – Using Radiant Barriers to Keep the Heat Out

Radiant barriers and reflective insulation protect astronauts and spacecraft against thermal radiation in the fluctuating temperatures of space. Hear how these same materials can keep your home cooler and more comfortable while reducing air conditioning costs.

June 1, 2017 – Repurposed Materials: Finding Treasures for Reuse

Discover creative ways to reuse materials while saving money and natural resources.
