Recently, there has been quite a bit of coverage in the news about the Desert Discovery Center, which is now in the planning/design stage. Factual articles that The Peak has published have attracted a substantial amount of interest and comments for and against the project. Our goal is to keep our readers informed about this important project. In this news alert, Christine Kovach, Chairman of the Board of Desert Discovery Center Scottsdale, seeks to “set the record straight” by addressing some of the objections raised by critics.
DDC Scottsdale News (PDF)PS. GPPA, which publishes The Peak, has not taken a formal position on final approval of the DDC. We are looking forward to reviewing and sharing the results of the planning that is now ongoing.

This promotion by Christine Kovach mischaracterizes our objections. Many of us are ok with a DDC – just do not want to use funds dedicated to acquiring & maintaining Preserve Land used for their project. We also do not want to tear up Preserve Desert (no matter how small) when there is so much Scottsdale desert already zoned for development.
Recently Mayor Lane has proposed a Resolution that would require a public vote before anything could be constructed on the Preserve. In order to find this position credible, we are requesting that the Mayor introduce this to the Council to vote on prior to the election, as after the election, he will be free to return to his prior support of the DDCS plan.
