Despite the objections of hundreds of residents present at the developer’s May 30th open house and statements of opposition from HOAs, GPPA-Friends of the Scenic Drive, and the Coalition of Greater Scottsdale, the applicant has filed a request with the City of Scottsdale to change Scottsdale’s General Plan and zoning for property on  Scottsdale’s Scenic Drive. If approved by Scottsdale’s City Council, the applicant plans to build and operate a large commercial self-storage facility on the NW corner of Lone Mountain and North Scottsdale Road.

The City of Scottsdale has opened two cases, one to allow the change to Scottsdale’s General Plan (Case 2-GP-2018) and one to change the zoning for the property from residential to commercial (Case 8-ZN-2018).  Because the request involves a change to the Scottsdale General Plan, the two cases will considered together following Scottsdale’s General Plan amendment process.

According to the City of Scottsdale Planning Department, it is expected the following public meetings will be held. It is extremely important that residents who oppose the commercial development attend and participate in these meetings.

  • Wednesday, October 3, 2018 -  Scottsdale Planning Commission Remote Hearing, 5 p.m.  Location to be determined.
  • Wednesday October 24, 2018 -  Scottsdale Planning Commission Recommendation Hearing, 4:30 p.m. Scottsdale City Hall- Kiva
  • Tuesday, December, 11, 2018 -  Scottsdale City Council Meeting & Vote, Scottsdale City Hall, Kiva
  • Wednesday, December 12, 2018 – Scottsdale City Council Meeting & Vote (If necessary), Scottsdale City Hall, Kiva

Most residents are not regularly involved in zoning cases. The next few weeks are a good time for these residents to begin gaining some knowledge about the case, processes and the government bodies that will vote on the cases. Ultimately, it is up to Scottsdale residents to get involved, not using their tempers but their minds, to oppose this proposal.  Join the many residents, past and present, who have worked for more than 55 years to protect and preserve the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive and the character of the adjacent area.

Below are links to recent articles about the case. These short articles contain a description of the open house meeting, the reasons the project is opposed, and links to information about Scottsdale’s Scenic Drive. You will also find links to pages in the City of Scottsdale website that provide information about the cases, planning terminology and processes, and the planning commission and city council.
