Peak Photos: 12 Great Yesteryear Covers

June 31, 2019

By Les Conklin

Enjoy these A Peek at the Peak (The Peak) magazine covers. I know the talented people that produced these beautiful works enjoyed themselves and are proud of their “work.”  We really cannot thank them enough.

If you have lived in north Scottsdale for a few years, some of the covers will evoke memories of our area’s past. Our family used to watch the 4th of July fireworks at Rawhide from a deck on our roof every year. We also enjoyed visits to Heard Museum North. Both Rawhide and Heard North were generous supporters of our organization. Troon North Golf Course has also helped our cause.  There are not as many real cowboys as in the past but there are places to go horseback riding and many people own hourses that live in the area.

Several of the photos were winners of the The Peak‘s annual photography contests. The winner of the very first contest was “Peak Promise” by Kathy Howard.  The Peak has been fortunate to have had professional photographers, including Tony Nelssen, Dennis Liddell and Frank Biondo donate their talents and help create some of the covers shown here.  We also thank the many residents who have donated photographs for publication.

We live in a beautiful place. We also have some special people that live here. One of my favorite photos is of Ralph and Nancy Knight and GPPA’s other founders. Another favorite is Bob Fox releasing a great horned owl. Bob and his wife, “Sam,” founded and operate Wild At Heart. This spring Wild At Heart alreadu has more than 500  raptors under its care. Bob is a member of GPPA’s Board of Directors..
