Each month a group of musicians from Cave Creek, Carefree, Fountain Hills, Rio Verde and Scottsdale come together to bring enjoyment to the residents of senior retirement and nursing homes in the area.
They call themselves the Joyful Sounds.
A few of the Joyful Sounds are professional musicians. Most are simply people who want to provide the audience pleasure, and to acknowledge the value of each member of the audience.
Early in the year the group rehearses songs from a familiar Broadway musical: My Fair Lady, Guys and Dolls, The Music Man. This year they are singing the songs from Finian’s Rainbow, such as “Old Devil Moon.” In the first half of the performance they let the songs tell the story of the show.
The second half of the concert has the singers moving out into the audience with large print copies of familiar songs like “Take me out to the ballgame,” and “My wild Irish Rose.”
It is wonderful to see the audience come alive as they join the Joyful Sounds in singing songs they have known all their lives.
The Joyful Sounds is a volunteer group; no one gets paid. But they often say that performing with the group is the most rewarding thing in their lives. They do this with professionalism, collaboration, good humor, respect, and humility.
If you are interested in joining the group, there are no auditions. If you want to be in, you are in!
If you would like to join the group, or know of a venue that would like the Joyful Sounds to perform, please contact: Toni at winck@cox.net.
