Howard & Carol Myers helped the Scenic Drive. You can too.
By Les Conklin
In 1997, Howard and Carol Myers and other Friends of the Scenic Drive volunteers marched in the Cave Creek Parade to promote Cookout at the Ranch and the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive. The Cookout, organized by Friends, was co-sponsored by MacDonald’s Ranch and Outback Steakhouse and attracted thousands of guests over its successful 16-years-long run. The Cookout benefitted wildlife conservation, Scottsdale’s fledgling Preserve and Scenic Corridor initiatives, and the Scenic Drive.
In a vibrant growing community where development threatens the natural environment and quality of life, it takes steadfastness, work, TLC, and financial support to fend off the forces of time and change. Cookout at the Ranch volunteers and guests understood the challenge of preserving and enhancing a unique landmark established in 1963
Jake Kulp, a member of Friends of the Scenic Drive and resident of north Scottsdale, is organizing a Friends exhibit maintenance project to re-paint the rocks that surround each roadside exhibit plant and clear numerous exhibits of weeds and overgrowth. Friends also plans to restore the original appearance of the Scenic Drive’s entry and exhibit monuments by giving them a fresh coat of paint.
