Dog Daze

or some reason I’m thinking about Spring during the Fall. Perhaps it was the smell of Mom cooking eggplant parmesan. Let me explain.

Spring is the time of year when Mom does her veggie plantings in the backyard. She works up the soil in these stock tanks, plants interesting things, and then we all get to watch them grow, which can be a little boring.

Each year she has planted one of my favorites, eggplant. I can tell from far away when we get one of those on the plant, because they are a dark color. I like to wait until they smell just right, then I jump up into the container and make off with them. Yum, yum. It took Mom quite a while to figure out what was going on. She was certain that a ground squirrel was getting into the backyard and gobbling them up.

Then, OOPSY, I brought one in through the doggie door, took it into my crate to eat, and forgot to clean up the big stem. When Mom cleaned out our beds, she found the evidence. Then, I noticed a roll of chicken wire near the tanks, and the next day, the eggplant was fenced in and I was fenced out.

Other goodies from the garden include broccoli (except for the bad gas), cucumbers (nice and juicy), and she told Dad she was going to plant zucchini next Spring. Can’t wait to check that one out. I am not sure how much chicken wire there is. I’m hoping Mom will have forgotten about my eggplant thievery by the time Spring rolls around.

Note. The “Mom” in this article helps me write. Her name is Michelle Anderson.

About Foothills Animal Rescue

Foothills Animal Rescue (FAR) is a nonprofit, volunteer organization. Its mission is to provide shelter, care, and adoption services for many of the thousands of domestic cats and dogs that stray, become lost, or are abandoned each year in Maricopa County. FAR also provides animal adoption services for pet owners who, due to circumstances, must give up their animals. Domestic cats and dogs are not equipped to survive without human support. Most lost or abandoned animals quickly become malnourished and many are injured, making them easy prey for the area’s coyotes and hawks.

FAR maintains a no-kill policy, and all sheltered animals are cared for until such time as a suitable adoption is arranged. All animals offered for adoption have been given medical attention and are in good health. Additionally, all animals have been spayed or neutered. If you are looking for a loving pet or supporting FAR’s efforts, please contact us.

For more information, write to Foothills Animal Rescue, PO Box 4865, Cave Creek, AZ 85327, call (480) 488-9890, visit foothillsanimal.org, or email: far@extremezone.com.
