Dog Daze

In some of my past articles, I’ve told you about the hassles that I have with my Mom when we go for walks. She thinks I need to be beside her and I want to be out front, way out front. She complains that her arms get tired (can you say “needs to work out?”).

One morning, we passed a man walking two big dogs on the other side of the street. I guess I went bonkers, acting like I was on a bungee cord.  I don’t know why, but she apologized to the man. Then he suggested she buy a dog harness called “walk nice.”

Guess what happened next! Off we go to the pet store to get one. They work differently than the face halters do. The new harness pulls my shoulders, not my neck or my snout. So now I’m walking nicely. At least until the next time I see a cat or dog along the way.

The “Dog Daze” column was originated by the late Rita Cohen and “written” by her dog, Lucky. Rita was an avid volunteer at Foothills Animal Rescue. Michelle has kept the column, Rita’s memory, and the support of Foothills Animal Hospital alive. Lucky was happily adopted by a family located here in the Valley of the Sun.

About Foothills Animal Rescue Foothills Animal Rescue (FAR) is a nonprofit, volunteer organization. Its mission is to provide shelter, care, and adoption services for many of the thousands of domestic cats and dogs that stray, become lost, or are abandoned each year in Maricopa County. FAR also provides animal adoption services for pet owners who, due to circumstances, must give up their animals. Domestic cats and dogs are not equipped to survive without human support. Most lost or abandoned animals quickly become malnourished and many are injured, making them easy prey for the area’s coyotes and hawks. FAR maintains a no-kill policy, and all sheltered animals are cared for until such time as a suitable adoption is arranged. All animals offered for adoption have been given medical attention and are in good health. Additionally, all animals have been spayed or neutered. If you are looking for a loving pet or supporting FAR’s efforts, please contact us.

  1. Has Liz Stapleton Ogden published her book, That Funny Little Mountain yet. If so, where can it be purchased?

    • Harriet,

I saw Liz at her 80th birthday party in November and the book has not been published. I believe she is still writing it.
