Discovering the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive – Introduction

The article, which was originally published in the Summer 1996 issue of Scottsdale Magazine, was written to encourage enhancement and promotion of the Scenic Drive by the City of Scottsdale and its residents.  The article’s author, Les Conklin (yours truly), later founded Friends of the Scenic Drive with the support of the city. Written as a travel article to educate readers about the potential importance of the landmark to tourism; one of the reasons the drive was created in 1963. “Discovering the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive” describes the creation and decline of the drive’s exhibits, and the history, flora, and fauna of the area through which the drive passes.

At the time the article was written, we were in the early days of an effort, with the support of the City of Scottsdale, to restore and enhance the drive’s plant exhibits and monuments, which were the victims of … Sorry folks, you’ll have to read the article to learn what victimized the drive.
