Howdie Pardner,
Yup. It’s good to see you again. Desert Les is back. Not because them Peak readers demanded it but because the fool editor told Desert Les to fill this here white space with interestin’ doings and seeings.
Desert Les has been following orders and hunkerin’ down in the family bunkhouse. That dang virus can’t find us here but fortunately an historian in Foster, Rhode Island did.
Past Hardships and Courage
Desert Les wants to thank Robert Grandchamp for the two photographs below. The photos, taken in the 1860s, are of two deceased family members, Searles Bradford Young and his wife, Anna Hopkins Young. Anna and Searles were both talented writers, especially in a time when writing was done on paper using pen and ink, without a spell checker, eraser, whiteout, or automatic software correction.
Desert Les don’t know about you but a great read helps bunkhouse time fly by. Thanks to Robert Grandchamp you will find a link to writings that the Youngs left for us to consider in our stressful times.
Civil War Reminders
The pieces, a letter and a memoir, are so good that Desert Les has read them numerous times and shared them with others at every opportunity. Reading them again last week reminded Desert Les that hiding out from the virus ain’t so bad, especially if you have something that’s exceptional and reminiscent of past hardships and courage.
