July 6, 2019

Howdie Pardner,

Yup. It’s good to see you again. Desert Les is back. Not because them Peak readers demanded it but because the fool editor told Desert Les to fill this here white space with some interestin’ doings.

Well, this mornin’ Desert Les’ wife, Judy, showed him the video below and got old  Les all riled up to learn more about this festival and then ride off to Mongolia, China. Sure we have lots of Arabian horses in these parts, but Desert Les has never seen them swirling about in the desert. Nope.

Not Too Late

It not too late for us to enjoy the Naadam festival if we giddyup down to Sky Harbor. The festival begins Thursday, July 11
and ends on Monday, July 15. Desert Les didn’t book his flights yet but I expect it will be a long trip to Ulaanbaatar.

Video: Discovering Naadam Festival

Naadam is celebrated in various parts of Mongolia but Desert Les does not want to miss the opening ceremony at the National Sports Stadium in Ulaanbaatar. Pardner, it’s quite a ceremony when Genghis Khan’s nine horse tails, representing the nine tribes of the Mongols, arrive at the stadium to open the festivities. In addition to the games themselves, there are parades of mounted cavalry, athletes and monks.  Unfortunately, Genghis and Kubla Kan passed away a bit back and will only be there in spirit. Perhaps, their spirits inspired the horses to spiral.

Are you chomping at the bit yet? Pardner relax, below is a link to the festival’s website for more information. See you in Mongolia. Yup.
