For more than 20 years, A Peek at the Peak (The Peak) has published a popular column entitled “On the Wild Side.” The column has been submitted by Wild At Heart, the raptor rescue and rehabilitation organization founded by Bob and his wife, “Sam” Fox.

For most of those years, the column was written by William LeRoy, a Wild At Heart volunteer.. A 2017 column, “Sharing the Desert with Raptors” described the impact of rat poison on raptors and their food chain. Fortunately the article caught the eye of Gabriel Sandler at ASU’s Cronkite News.

Motivated by what he learned, Sandler wrote “Rat poison in prey threatens owls, other animals.” The story was published on December 12, 2017 and became part of Elemental: Covering Sustainability, a new multimedia collaboration between Cronkite News, Arizona PBS, KJZZ, KPCC, Rocky Mountain PBS and PBS SoCal. Funded by the Corporation of Public Broadcasting System – Arizona.

Bottom line, thanks to the Cronkite piece Wild At Heart, has received some well-deserved recognition. Click below to enjoy the article.
