Critter Guide: White Winged Dove

White-winged Dove

critter_doveThe white-winged dove is a plump, fast-flying  bird with a small head and a low cooing voice. The white-winged dove is the only North American species of dove that has a large white patch on the wing.  When it flies, large, white areas on the wings are evident.  A closer look will also reveal smaller white areas on the tail.     They are about the same size as domestic pigeons seen in many cities.   They are simlar to a mourning dove, also common in the Foothills, but heavier.

White-winged doves eat seeds, waste grain, fruit and insects. Their nest is a flimsy twig platform that is built in a tree, thicket or ocotillo. It lays two eggs.
