Most city offices closed Jan. 1 and 21 for holidays. Most city offices will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 1, for New Year’s Day and again Monday, Jan. 21, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Collection for New Year’s takes place one day later than normal for the week. Collection for the MLK holiday will not be affected. Please note that aquatic and fitness centers will be closed Jan. 1. Start your new year with a paper cleanse. Bring your personal and/or commercial documents to the “Shred It” event from 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, in the Walmart parking lot, 15355 N. Northsight Blvd. Cost is $4 per box or bag. ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “shredding event”

Recycle your Christmas tree at these drop off locations, Jan. 5-13. Yellow collection bins will be available at three city parks: Eldorado, Scottsdale Ranch and Thompson Peak. We don’t accept artificial trees, stands or ornaments. Single-family home residents can place Christmas trees in their green waste pile, separated from bulk trash, for collection on their scheduled brush/bulk service week. Check out the library’s book sale, Jan. 12. Gently used books, DVDs, movies and more will be on sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Mustang Library. ScottsdaleLibrary.org, click “Events,” then “Online Calendar”

Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction rolls in Jan. 12-20. It’s the granddaddy of all car events. The Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction returns Jan 12-20 to WestWorld bringing hundreds of the world’s finest collector automobiles and thousands of spectators to Scottsdale. The auction also features an exhibitor marketplace and hours of live worldwide television coverage on Discovery Channel and Velocity. Barrett-Jackson.com 

Sunday A’Fair minifestivals return Jan. 13. Sunday A’Fair features free outdoor concerts by the Valley’s top musicians, an arts-and-crafts market and fun activities for children and families. The concerts run from noon to 4 p.m. most Sundays Jan. 13-April 7, on the Civic Center Mall. ScottsdalePerformingArts.org, search “Sunday A’fair”

Register for the Martin Luther King Jr. Dinner Celebration, Jan. 16. Modern-day activist Carmen Perez headlines Scottsdale’s 25th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Dinner Celebration. The event takes place Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the Embassy Suites, 5001 N. Scottsdale Road. Registration begins at 5 p.m., and the program starts at 6. Perez is an activist who has worked on civil rights issues – including mass incarceration, women’s rights and gender equity, violence prevention, racial healing and community policing. Tickets are $75 each and can be purchased online.

Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon runs through Scottsdale Jan. 20. The full-marathon course enters Scottsdale along Indian School Road and includes a portion of Old Town. The half-marathon course includes Scottsdale sections of Thomas, McDowell, Hayden and Scottsdale roads. Road closure information will be available soon on the marathon website.  RunRockNRoll.com

Take steps to promote acceptance at Regional Unity Walk, Jan. 26. Scottsdale is joining other Valley cities for the annual Unity Walk to promote mutual respect and understanding. The event starts at Tempe Beach Park with a festival at 4:30 p.m., and then a one-mile walk over the Mill Avenue Bridge at 6 p.m. Get details on where the Scottsdale group will meet by calling 480-312-2727. Registration opens in January for Scottsdale City Government 101. Discover how city staff and elected officials work together to serve you! Participants will engage with executive level managers, directors and administrators from various city departments. You’ll learn about the council/manager form of city government and meet your mayor and council, as well as charter officers. The academy begins in March and runs noon to 2 p.m. Thursdays for eight weeks. ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “Scottsdale 101”

Home Safe Home program helps seniors reduce falls. Fire Department volunteers visit seniors’ homes to address potential tripping and falling hazards. They also can replace smoke alarm batteries or install a new alarm. ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “home safe home”

Spring into action with Parks & Recreation classes this January. From acrylic painting to Zumba, we’ve got you covered. Check out the variety of leisure education classes to keep you happy and healthy in the new year! Registration opens Dec. 3 for residents. Classes run January through March. Make a splash and earn some cash. If you’re 15 or older, now’s the time to become a certified lifeguard – January classes are half price! The StarGuard lifeguard training certifies participants in rescues, basic first aid and CPR. Classes run 5 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and 8 to 2:30 p.m. Saturdays, Jan. 22-Feb. 5. Once you’re certified, you’re eligible to apply for a lifeguard position with the city and other agencies that use lifeguards. ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “lifeguard”

Take a jab at getting fit this January at Club SAR Boxing & Fitness Center. Scottsdale’s Club SAR Boxing & Fitness Center is the perfect spot this January to meet your physical conditioning goals. Classes include Yoga, boxing, kickboxing, conditioning, spin, Tabata, Barre, rowing and weight training. Equipment includes a boxing ring, heavy bags, treadmills, bikes, stair climbers, rowers, elliptical machines, free weights, weight machines and full-court indoor basketball. More ways to get fit! McDowell Mountain Ranch, Cactus and Eldorado aquatic and fitness centers are open for adult lap swim, water exercise classes and exercising. Register for monthly water exercise classes or just “drop in.” Entrance fee to the centers is $3 for residents. ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “aquatics”

Reserve a ramada or a room. Did you know you can rent meeting space and ramadas through Scottsdale’s Facility Booking Office? Host your kid’s next birthday party at a city park, find great space for a family reunion or book a room for your next business meeting. ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “reservations”

Free trolley service expanded. Scottsdale’s free trolley service now goes to the Via Linda Senior Center, Mountain View Community Center, Mustang Transit Center, Mustang Library and the shopping center at Northsight Boulevard and Raintree Drive. Check out the new routes at  ScottsdaleTrolley.com.

Rebate eligible? Scottsdale Water offers multiple rebates to help customers save money and conserve water. Rebates are available for installing WaterSense irrigation controllers/timers, toilets, showerheads, and also for removing water softeners and in-ground pools. ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “rebates”
