The Cave Creek Museum re-opens on October 1st after its usual summer break. Evelyn Johnson, Cave Creek Museum Executive Director, and volunteers have been hard at work readying exhibits and planning upcoming events. The Cave Creek Museum has been a steadfast supporter of the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive. The museum’s outdoor exhibits include a replica of the original entry sign that was posted on Scottsdale Road. The other entry sign, which was located  on Cave Creek Road was destroyed by developers in the 1980s.

The original Scottsdale Road sign were installed by residents in 1964 to mark the southern end of the Scottsdale Road leg of the drive. The sign was located just north of the power line corridor on the east side of Scottsdale Road. In the mid-90s, the sign was donated to the Cave Creek Museum by Scottsdale’s Friends of the Scenic Drive at a ceremony attended by Scottsdale Mayor Herb Drinkwater and officials from Cave Creek and Carefree.

The following year, at the request of City of Scottsdale planning, the entry to the Scenic Drive was moved to the south of the power line corridor, to the intersection of Happy Valley Road. Friends and the City of Scottsdale erected a new entry monument on the east side of Scottsdale Road, just south of Happy Valley Road. The city said it would simplify planning and Friends were pleased that more desert would be showcased in the future.

When gusts of  wind destroyed the original entry sign, Friends volunteer Horst Berkner created a replica of the wooden entry sign that was installed with other outdoor exhibits at the museum. This summer a museum volunteer gave the replica, pictured here< a new coat of shellac. Thank you.
