The Arizona Authors’ Association has announced that “Chloe and the Desert Heroes: A Tale of Adventure in the Sonoran Desert” is one of three finalists for the 2017 Arizona Literary Award, children’s literature division.

The award winner will be revealed at the Arizona Authors’ Association annual awards celebration on November 4, 2017.

A group of local residents who are members of the Desert Awareness Committee, part of the Foothills Community Foundation, collaborated to write the book. They are: Abby Hemingway, Kathleen Hindle, Brenda Olive, Phyllis Strupp, and Diane Vaszily.

“Chloe and the Desert Heroes”, written for a ‘tween audience, is a coming-of-age tale about 12-year-old Chloe, who gets lost in the desert when she chases after her dog, Peppy, in pursuit of a rabbit. She encounters some survival heroes of the Sonoran Desert, who help her learn some important life lessons about bullying and resilience as she finds her way home.

Original color illustrations throughout the book were created by Valley residents Judy Speer and Georgia Taylor.
