Artist’s Loft Update: Becoming a MIM Museum Guide

tour guide at MIM In September 2015, The Peak published an Artist’s Loft column by Natalie Keller about the Musical Instrument Museum’s (MIM) tour guide training program. To write the article, Natalie visited the MIM and conducted in-depth interviews with members of the education department. We just received the following notice that was sent to MIM tour guides by the education department. The program that Natalie wrote about is a rousing success. Here is the notice.

School Tours Reach 50,000 in 2015

Museum guides make a difference in the future of the arts

“At first I was nervous . . . and then happy when I got there. I was surprised how many instruments there were. Thank you for letting us see the instruments.” —Seven-year-old student on a MIM field trip For many students touring on a school field trip, MIM is the first museum they have ever visited. Thanks to our museum guides, young guests such as this elementary school student have such a fun and memorable experience at MIM. Consider the amazing impact that museum guides make (along with everyone else the kids encounter while at MIM) not only on the individual lives of these students but also on the future of the arts in our community. If each of our youngest guests visits us, perhaps nervous at first, but leaves the museum feeling like it was the greatest place to visit, the happiest and most welcomed he or she has felt anywhere, and, on top of that, curious to learn more about music, world cultures, art, and other museums . . . it isn’t much of a stretch to say that these students will be the biggest supporters of the arts in the future. The past twelve months have seen more than 50,000 (compared to approximately 41,000 in 2014) school and youth tour participants at MIM—each and every one greeted by a smiling, enthusiastic museum guide, plus other team members along the way. Congratulations, team! We’re looking forward to the spring semester and to welcoming more museum guides after January’s training.
