Arizona Pride helped the Scenic Drive. You can too.
By Les Conklin
In 2003 Friends of the Scenic Drive was one of only three organizations to receive the prestigious statewide Community Leadership Governor’s Pride in Arizona Award. Friends was honored for building community pride in the Desert Foothills Scenic Drive by creating and maintaining plant exhibits on North Scottsdale Road, preservation and enhancement of roadside vegetation and vistas, reduction of pollution, publicizing the heritage of the Scenic Drive and support of Scottsdale’s Preserve and Scenic Corridor initiatives.
In a vibrant growing community where development threatens the natural environment and quality of life, it takes steadfastness, work, TLC, and financial support to fend off the forces of time and change. In 2003, Arizona Pride understood the challenge of preserving and enhancing a unique landmark established 40 years earlier. Now it is time to strengthen our pride in the Scenic Drive.
Jake Kulp, a member of Friends of the Scenic Drive and resident of north Scottsdale, is organizing a Friends exhibit maintenance project to re-paint the rocks that surround each roadside exhibit plant and clear the numerous exhibits of weeds and overgrowth. Friends also plans to restore the original appearance of the Scenic Drive’s entry and exhibit monuments by giving them a fresh coat of paint.
