A Tribute to Art DeCabooter

Dr. Art DeCabooter

At last night’s meeting of the Scottsdale City Council, I was surprised and saddened when Mayor Lane announced that Art DeCabooter had died on Wednesday, October 9th. Art was the longtime president of Scottsdale Community College and a highly respected Scottsdale civic leader.

He leaves an impressed record of community service that includes being one of the pioneer leaders of the establishment of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. I’m proud to have served on the McDowell Sonoran Preserve Commission when he was its chairman.

In an article in today’s Arizona Republic, Art’s wife and friends referred to him as a “humble” and “gentle giant of a man,” assessments that strike me as being spot-on. If you have ever taken courses at Scottsdale Community College or been involved with the school in any way, you know what a fine institution he molded prior to retiring in 2008.

He served as president of the Scottsdale Charros, Scottsdale Rotary Club and Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce – all at the same time. DeCabooter also was a member of the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust Board of Trustees and served on the advisory board for Xavier College Preparatory.

In addition to Mary, his wife, children and grandchildren, Art leaves behind many, many friends and admirers. A Celebration of Life will be held on November 23, 2019. Details will be released.
