It’s Been 15 Years Since Scheherazade Led the Way

September 2018

By Les Conklin

The cover of the September 2003 issue of A Peek at the Peak (The Peak) featured Scheherazade, a female great horned owl, and her brood of foster owlets. Scheherazade was in tough shape when she was rescued.  She was saved and rehabilitated by Wild At Heart.  Unfortunately, due to her injuries she could no longer fly, which eliminated the possibility of releasing her back the wild.

Bob and “Sam” Fox, the founders and operators of Wild At Heart, decided to try using Scheherazade as a foster parent for rescued owlets. She took to her responsibilities naturally and raised many, many baby owls that were released after growing and learning to fly.

The original photograph, shown to the right, was taken by the late Tony Nelssen. Tony edited the photo and designed  the magazine’s cover,  which is shown below. The final graphic layout of the cover was done by Sandie McCune.

In 2003, The Peak was printed in black and white ink, mailed to GPPA members and distributed to others via racks that were located at grocery stores and other public places. This cover is special for two reasons. First, it was the first Peak cover that used color (one color of our choice and black and white). Tony used yellow for the eyes of the raptors.

The cover, which is framed and hangs in our family room, is also special because it was used for the first issue that I published as editor of The Peak.  Perhaps Scheherazade could not fly but my time has flown by during the past 15 years. Time really does fly when you are having fun. Thank you one and for your support. Special thanks to Bob  and Sam Fox (Bob now serves on GPPA’s board).
