Scottsdale Community College
Business School to Offer New Cannabis Industry Education

Scottsdale, Ariz., Sept. 10, 2020The Business School at Scottsdale Community College (SCC) will begin offering courses and educational training for Cannabis industry entrepreneurs. The Cannabis Industry Education program features non-credit, 8-week online courses scheduled to begin Fall 2020. SCC is the first public institution in Arizona to offer Cannabis curriculum.

The Cannabis Industry Education courses will cover topics including industry history, product descriptions, career opportunities, economics, marketing, supply chain management, dispensary business planning, funding resources and regulatory environments. Students will have access to cannabis industry experts and guest speakers.

“It is the right time to bring industry experts and qualified educators together in this growing industry,” said Dr. Kevin Rubin, founder of the Cannabis Educational Institute and program faculty member.

Dr. Rubin is a graduate of Michigan State University where he received a BA in Law. He also holds a MBA, MPA, and PhD with a specialization in public policy and law. As a cannabis industry consultant and seasoned professional for 15 years, Dr. Rubin operated a medical cannabis dispensary as the Chief Operations Officer in Arizona. He was responsible for all business operations related to products and inventory, retail operations, financial protocols and security measures. Dr. Rubin has also coordinated consulting solutions for applications, site acquisition, retail design, regulatory compliance, loss mitigation, business plan development and competitive strategy. He has provided strategic direction for start-up medical cannabis dispensaries throughout the country.

The total economic impact of legal Cannabis sales is expected to increase from $38 billion to $46 billion in 2019 to $106 billion to $130 billion by 2024 – a 181% increase, according to the Marijuana Fact Book. More than 200,000 people were employed in the Cannabis industry in 2017, according to New Frontier Data (newfrontierdata.com), and this number is expected to grow.

“The Cannabis industry is expanding in Arizona and across the country, requiring employees with specialized training – which matches perfectly with the local workforce development instruction that a community college can provide,” said Dr. Bobra Crockett, SCC’s Cannabis Program Faculty Lead.

The Cannabis courses are not associated with any Arizona state licensure or certification and are not part of an established program of study by Scottsdale Community College.
