At its June 7th meeting, the Scottsdale City Council voted 5-2 in favor of using Swaback Partners as the architects for the design of the Desert Discovery Center. Phillips and Littlefield opposed. Smith, Klapp, Korte, and Milhaven in favor. Mayor Lane also supported but advocated for a public vote re: final approval of the DDC. 23 speakers spoke against – representing 56 people in opposition. 16 spoke representing 33 people in favor. The was concensus (How about that!) that Swaback Partners was the best choice. Many of those who spoke against the Swaback proposal did so because they do not want the DDC to be built in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

I believe the DDC would be a helpful and worthy tourist attraction,
but I am totally opposed to locating it inside the Preserve. Why is this necessary?
There are good alternatives which so far have not been taken into consideration. I do
not believe that after Scottsdale citizens voted twice for sales tax dollars to acquire
the Preserve that we want to be taxed further to pay for what so far is conceived by the
DDCC to be outrageously large and intrusive within the Preserve. If this is to be accomplished,
I feel extremely strongly that it has to be approved by the voters. Why can’t we all be reasonable
and find a satisfactory alternative site for the DDC which does not deface the Preserve.
It is a PRESERVE and not a park and should continue to be treated as a Preserve. Who is to say
that if construction for a DDC within the Preserve is achieved, it will not be the first step in
further commercial development and even eventual housing developments. I believe we need to
hold the line now and keep our Preserve a PRESERVE.
