FOOTHILLS ANIMAL RESCUE TO OPEN NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY
Groundbreaking for new Brynne Smith Memorial Campus will be held on April 19
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – April 13, 2016 – In order to provide even more abandoned dogs and cats with comfortable housing, personalized attention and the potential to find forever homes, Foothills Animal Rescue will break ground on their new, animal-friendly Brynne Smith Memorial Campus on April 19.
The state-of-the-art facility funded through a generous designated grant from the Smith Family through Arizona Community Foundation is slated to open in November. It will honor the memory of Brynne Smith, who will be lovingly remembered through commemorative architectural nuances throughout the shelter.
“More than just a building, the new facility will be a lasting reminder of a true animal lover,” said Victoria Cowper, Foothills Animal Rescue Executive Director. “By serving as a temporary refuge for those awaiting loving homes, it will recognize that dogs and cats have a voice, strengthen the human-animal bond, and celebrate the vital role that companion animals play in our lives.”
Designed to be both animal friendly and aesthetically appealing, the new 4,200-square-foot campus will maximize the comfort of its residents while serving as a gathering spot for the local community.
The lobby will boast soaring 18-foot ceilings to let in natural light, an eight-foot viewing window into one of the four community cat rooms, a “feature pet” area with a 10-foot glass enclosure, and two “meet and greet” rooms for potential families and pets to get acquainted.
Of varied sizes to accommodate distinct scenarios, the four community cat rooms will offer cozy sleeping areas, sisal pads for scratching, and special enrichment equipment designed by Crijio Pet Products and provided through a generous grant from PetSmart Charities that will encourage natural feline behavior like climbing, jumping, hiding and perching aloft.
Eight dog rooms will offer floor-to-glass frontage for optimal viewing, comfortable beds, a music system for stress reduction, seamless epoxy floors, and porcelain tile up the walls. While outside, the smaller canine residents will enjoy two 100-foot dog runs at the front of the building, while their larger counterparts can romp around in a fully fenced 1,000-square-foot dog run adjacent to the courtyard.
A 1,500-square-foot flexible public and shelter space with stunning shade sails and a series of metal sculptures in the form of public art, the courtyard will serve as a natural location for events, dog training, children’s camps and neighbors to gather.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the new Brynne Smith Memorial Campus will be held on April 19 at 9 am at the shelter’s future location at 10197 East Bell Road in Scottsdale. The general public and residents from the surrounding communities are warmly invited to attend the festivities.

Founded in 1995, Foothills Animal Rescue is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization. The cage-free, no-kill shelter is a temporary safe haven for homeless dogs and cats rescued from Maricopa County public intake facilities, where they are provided with food, exercise, housing and medical care.
In 2011, Foothills Animal Rescue purchased and retrofitted an office complex in North Scottsdale to shelter up to 80 dogs and cats. Since then, they have found forever homes for 2,800 dogs and cats through adoption events, foster homes and direct placement from the shelter.
