Comments on: Desert Edge Alert: Public Process Update https://apeekatthepeak.org/desert-edge-alert-public-process-update/ A Scottsdale Community Publication Fri, 10 Nov 2017 21:38:41 +0000 hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.9.4 By: Howard Myers https://apeekatthepeak.org/desert-edge-alert-public-process-update/#comment-4400 Sat, 16 Sep 2017 19:56:37 +0000 https://apeekatthepeak.org/?p=21610#comment-4400 Residents should pay attention to the Desert Discovery Center (DDC),AKA Desert Edge (DE) project because they want to put it in the Preserve we all voted to form and tax ourselves to buy. The intention is to put it at the Gateway trail head, the most popular and used trail head in the Preserve, which is already overcrowded. In addition, the DE will violate multiple rules in the Preserve Ordinance, which were in there specifically to prevent the Preserve from becoming a park. There is absolutely NO reason the DE has to be in the Preserve, except for the fact that they want to use Preserve funds to build it, funds we taxed ourselves to provide for land acquisition. So in addition to commercializing our Preserve they want to steal land acquisition funds to build it. To make matters worse, if it is in he Preserve, the city has to own it and run it, so we all will be on the hook to make up whatever the operating losses are. The Preserve Commission did not approve it, rather then sent a letter to the council listing all their concerns with it, basically the same as all previous Preserve Commission concerns, all those things planned that violate the Preserve Ordinance.
This is a disaster for anyone who though we bought a desert Preserve and wanted your tax funds to be used to buy land for the Preserve. In addition it is transforming the Preserve into a park, the last thing anyone who formed the Preserve wanted. To quote the late Chet Andrews (one of those who formed the Preserve and started the McDowell Sonoran Land Trust, now the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy),”It is a Preserve NOT a park”.

I find this offensive that you are promoting this invasion of the Sonoran Preserve paid for by the citizens of Scottsdale.

Most of the people in the north end of Scottsdale are opposed to the violations proposed to the Preserve Ordinance which will be committed by Desert Eddge. I would think your publication should remain neutral on the issue. The Sonoran Preserve Commission would not recommend this plan to the council. That speaks volumes. It is the tourism industry which is committed to have the city spend $61 million to invade the Preserve.
