Cactus Shadows High School announced their 2018-19 Hall of Fame Inductees at this month’s Homecoming game.
Coach Jerry Cumberland who was accompanied by his wife Cindy. Coach Cumberland worked at Cactus Shadows High School from 1986 – 2014. He spent 26 years as a teacher and 28 years as a coach. Coach Cumberland coached several sports including Football, Track & Field, Girls Basketball, and Boys Basketball. Throughout his years of coaching, Cumberland received several honors including: 2A North Desert Region Track Coach of the Year in 87-88, 88-89, and 91-92; 3A North Central Region Track Coach of the Year 92-93; 3A Girls State Track Runner-up 93-94 with the team scoring 107 pts; and Northwestern College Red Raider Alumni Coach of the Year 1995. Coach Cumberland’s favorite athletic memory is helping athletes reach their goals and become better people from their athletic experiences.
Lauren Weaver (the 2018 CSHS Girls Golf team accepted on her behalf). Lauren Weaver attended Cactus Shadows from 2005-2009 while here, she received the following honors: 2005, 2007, 2008 4A Women’s Golf State Team Champions; 2006 4A Women’s Golf State Team Runner-Up; 2007, 2008 Individual 4A Women’s Golf Individual State Champion; 3rd academic ranking in the CSHS Class of 2009; and 4-year full scholarship to Northwestern University. After her time at Cactus Shadows, Lauren went on to compete in Golf at Northwestern University where she received the following honors: Golfworld’s Top 50 Female College Players to Watch for 2011-2012 season; 2010 Second Team All-Big Ten Honors; 2010 Lady Northern Individual Champion with a 1st round 66 (lowest score in program Northwestern history); 2011 Big Ten Championship Individual Runner-Up; 2011 First Team All-Big Ten Honors; and 2013 Big Ten Conference Women’s Golf Team Champion (1st in history of Northwestern women’s golf program). Lauren’s proudest accomplishment is winning 3 state team championships as a member of the CSHS women’s golf team.
Jessie Goulder Nelson. Jessie was accompanied by her husband Robert and two children Avery and Colby. Jessie was a 3 sport athlete competing in Cross Country, Basketball and Track & Field. While attending Cactus Shadows, she received the following honors: 3-year varsity letter runner for Cross Country and helped the Girls’ Cross Country Team win 3 regional championships; 4-year varsity letter for Basketball; School record holder for Track & Field in the 800m; and School record holder for Track & Field in the 4x800m relay. Jessie’s proudest athletic memory while attending Cactus Shadows was the excitement for the XC regional championships, as well as setting the school records in Track & Field. Jessie continued her athletic achievements after graduating from Cactus Shadows by attending Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA competing in Cross Country and Track & Field. It is there where she represented her collegiate team in the NAIA National Championship Marathon. Currently Jessie Nelson goes by Coach Nelson as she has moved back to her home town of Cave Creek to raise her family, work in the family business and is the Head Cross Country Coach for Cactus Shadows.
Jim Swetter, Interim Principal of CSHS said, “Congratulations to our inductees! Our Hall of Fame inductions are always a special night. I love that we are able to honor these individuals who have made such a contribution to Cactus Shadows Athletics; and this was a truly a deserving class!”
